5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive first release by up and coming band.., October 10, 2001

Call it "Roots Rock" "Folk Rock" or "Alternative Country". Elston Gunnn represent the best in what happening in music today. Band members singer/songwriter Jesse Bellamy and lead guitarist Noah Bellamy grew up on the country music of their father's group, the Bellamy Brothers, while drummer David Reffuse and bassist Bob Massicotte add both rock and R&B influences into the mix. The collective result is a truly American music.

Here are two reviews of Elston Gunnn's Music:

The very first thing you notice about this disc is how easily this band seems to click into their electro-acoustic grooves. Part of that may be the sibling syndrome (refer to The Kinks, Oasis, et. al.) that seems to drive Jesse and Noah Bellamy to throw a couple of elbows and reach a little harder for their moment in the spotlight - pushing the former's songwriting into lucid imagery (most noticeably "Betraying Mississippi") while the latter wrangles in a few liquid lead guitar licks. Bassist Bob Massicotte and drummer David Reffuse allow the brothers to bask in most of the attention, but only because they seem to hitch together in their own rock steady world. Which only elevates this Matchbox 20/Sister Hazel-styled emphatic folk-rock to another plateau somewhere.
- Scott Harrell

Lately, I've been listening to commercial country radio in my car. You'd think that after listening to hours and hours of the stuff something would stick in my head. It hasn't. I'll toss Elston Gunnn into the alt-country ghetto because at least those folks know how to write memorable songs, even if they can't get on the radio. "It Weeps In My Heart" is a good lost love song. "Betraying Mississippi" is my favorite here. The song is a slow burner about loss and alienation in the delta. "After The Flood" coasts on a good bluesy guitar riff while exploring some familiar lyrical territory without falling back on cliches. A smart A&R person could easily position Elston Gunnn along side roots rockers like John Hiatt.

1.0 out of 5 stars Elston Gunnn????? Who's jiving whom?????, August 5, 2003

Elston Gunnn was one of the original aliases of famed Bob Dylan. I've not listened to any of the CD advertised herein, but I'm highly suspicious of the inferred title/artist of the CD. Hmmmm.......Like a Rolling Stone????? NOT!!!!!
