Key Monster,
By "tomobie" (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Key Monster (Paperback)
I just finished reading a new novel by a new author...Lee Dravis. It's an engrossing tale of a scruffy skipper, a drag queen, a Baltimore drug dealer, a Cuban baseball player, a fed-up mistress and a news reporter trying to get back to the "big time." This ain't no Gilligan's Island...this is Key Monster. Dravis' touch with characters and settings is more than expert, and his raw-boned prose is tastefully done. Key Monster will satisfy suspense buffs looking for "changes in attitudes & latitudes." You can almost hear Jimmy Buffet in the background. So...go grab a copy of Key Monster, some salt, limes and get "wasted away in Margaritaville." It's a great summer read

A hell of a debut for Lee Dravis. Why isn't this guy publishing with Dell or Knopf? Key Monster proves that characters count. Smoothly written, darkly funny and totally original, Dravis has written, if not the great American novel, at least the perfect Key West novel. I can't wait to see what comes next from this new talent.

What a great read! I read it over Memorial Day weekend, and I couldn't have picked a better beach book. I got so caught up in it that every now and then, I actually glanced toward the horizon to see if maybe--just maybe I could see a sinuous neck plowing through the waters. The book is funny and whimsical, yet the characters are so well portrayed that in no time at all, the reader gets sucked into the action, never doubting that one way or another, the meeting between humans and Monster will make for a fantastic climax of the story. Any more books where that one came from?

Key Monster is the perfect summer vacation read. I just read it in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico which I understand is not too different from Key West. I felt that I was part of the action and I could not put the book down. Very interesting and well developed characters, great locales, and suspenseful plot. Great ending!

Key Monster, the debut novel from Lee Dravis, will rip your heart out and then make you laugh about it. After all, as the cover says, "Everyone has a monster in their life..." Whether you're hip or square, a narc or an old hippie, straight or gay, Key West is the place to be. Key Monster will keep you turning the pages! A perfect read while relaxing on a tropical beach on flying off to one. You won't want to come back home.
