Editorial Reviews

A former student of Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard and Kenny Burrell, Enrico Crivellaro has developed a refined yet explosive guitar style, becoming a favorite guitarist for several historic blues, swing, jazz and rock groups: Lester Butler's "13", the James Harman Band, the Janiva Magness Band and Royal Crown Revue, with whom he won "Swing Guitarist of the Year" award). He tours extensively all over the world in North, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and other locations. He's joined on this CD by guest vocalists James Harman and Finis Tasby.

It has been sometime since I wrote a review mainly because I seem to have run across a load of releases that are not worth spending any time on but Enrico Crivellaro changed that quickly. This debut release is everything you could ask for. On the disc, Crivellaro covers a variety of artists from Percy Mayfield to Little Milton and from BB King to Ruth Brown and he does so admirably. Crivellaro is joined on vocals by Finis Tasby on most tracks although James Harman, in whose band Crivellaro got his start, makes a guest appearance on two others tracks. While Crivellaro was previously named as Swing Guitarist of the year, he leaves the swing out of this formula and opts instead for some shuffles and twelve bar blues with a hint of jazz. Good stuff.

Can an Italian play the blues? Well, my friends, accordingly with this CD the answer is YES HE CAN, and very well indeed I would say! Being Italian myself I could hardly believe to find an Italian guitarist album included in the Amazon blues catalogue. What a surprise! With the help of an all star band including vocalists Finis Tasby and James Harman, keyboards player Bruce Kats and guitarist Alex Schultz, our "hero" Enrico delivers a very strong set of great blues played as written in the sacred books with incredible feeling and a lot of passion. His guitar playing is outstanding throughout the album and most notably his technique, tone control and phrasing is just constantly marvellous. He reminds me very closely the great Ronnie Earl. If you add up the quality of the other members of the band you can easily figure out the final result: an outstanding 5 stars blues album that deserve all your attention. Pick it up and you wont be disappointed!

Thanks to a review I read on the Amazon site, I bought this CD. I am a huge blues fan and am always looking for something new. This CD does not disappoint. It has become one of my all-time favorites and I keep going back to it. The music always sounds fresh, the guitar playing is clean and exceptional. The vocals are well delivered and in the traditional Chicago style. I have recommended this album many times over to my friends who are into the blues. You will not be disappointed.

I'm very proud as Italian descendant I'am that another Italian man,ENRICO CRIVELLARO, can play the Blues and in addition very good for certain though this so attractive debut is owing in part to the astute choice, as guest vocalist, James Harman on two numbers and Finis Tasby on six, contribution of the regular Ronnie Earl's pianist Bruce Katz and also because Crivellaro is a skilful guitarist and the themes chosen by him goes from Percy Mayfield, Ruth Brown, to Ramsey Lewis, Donald Byrd. Really is a very great record where all the themes have a very high level with highlights originals "Drinkin' Cheap Champagne", Train to Venice" where Crivellaro sounds similar to the great Ronnie Earl and covers Percy Mayfield's "You're in for a big surprise", Ruth Brown's "Rain is a Bringdown", Jeff Turmes's "Makin' Money" all of them well sung by Tasby, instrumentals Billy Page's " The `in' Crowd', Donald Byrd's "Black Jack" both with an immense piano work by Katz and Scott Steen's trumpet and a special instrumental Blues Webster's "Black Coffee" sung by Harman absolutely outstanding. In a short words highly recommended I give it 5 stars.

I never heard of Enrico Crivellaro, but boy was that a mistake, big time. As the other reviews indicate this guy can play the blues....with backing from Bruce Katz on the B3 organ and the other great blues sidemen he can't go wrong, and neither can you. This is a great addition to any blues collection and has some gret stuff on it, like MAKIN MONEY with vocals by Finis Tasby. Check out Help Me Flip another Flop or Black Coffee- gutsy blues vocals and great guitar work by Enrico...hard to believe this guy is really an Italian, could have been born in Memphis or Muscle Shoals....worth listening to.
