Book Description

January 23, 2008
Book Description:

"The Key of Solomon, Clavis Salomonis, is a medieval book on magic originally attributed to King Solomon. It is sometimes used as a grimoire.

It is possible that the Key of Solomon inspired later works such as the Clavicula Salomonis ("The Lesser Key of Solomon") also called Lemegeton, although there are many differences between the books. What may have inspired the Lemegeton are the conjurations and rituals of purification, and in a less important way, the clothing and magic symbols.

Several versions of the Key of Solomon exist, in various translations, and with minor or significant differences. Most manuscripts date to the 16th or 17th century, but a prototype in Greek still survives from the 15th century." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

About the Author

About the Author:

"King Solomon is a figure described in Middle Eastern scriptures as a wise ruler of an empire centred on the united Kingdom of Israel. He was born in Jerusalem about 1000 BC and reigned over Israel from 971 BC to 931 BC.

The Hebrew Bible accounts identify Solomon as the son of David. He is also called Jedidiah in the Tanakh (Old Testament), and is described as the third king of the United Monarchy, and the final king before the northern Kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah split; following the split his patrilineal descendants ruled over Judah alone.

The Bible accredits Solomon as the builder of the First Temple in Jerusalem, and portrays him as great in wisdom, wealth, and power. Solomon is the subject of many other later references and legends." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, November 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Key of Solomon the King: Translated from Ancient Manuscripts in the British Museum (Forgotten Books) (Paperback)
The Key Of Solomon the King is a grimoire, make no mistake, and a very specific one dealing with complex drawings of symbols and carving of Hebrew lettering. Perhaps the most important part of the book, really, is the pictures. In this copy of the book, many of the images are so poorly-photocopied that much of the text is illegible, and those that are not are still impossibly small. Many of the figures should be at least three times larger. Even more important, the first six figures, arguably the most important ones, are missing altogether.

The book has also not simply taken the text from an existing perfect PDF version (there are many out there), but instead has been written by scanning a physical copy and using text-recognition software to copy it out. As such, there are typographical errors that are very obvious (capital I's become the number 1, the occasional comma is a right bracket, etc.).

This is a copy of the best translation of the work, by Mathers, which takes reference from seven different manuscripts and compares them. Many of the footnotes are very useful in understanding the work, making it superior to any of the works by deLaurence. However, simply a little bit more TLC could have made this passable copy of the book great.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best version of the Key of Solomon at the moment., August 13, 2008
This review is from: The Key of Solomon the King: Translated from Ancient Manuscripts in the British Museum (Forgotten Books) (Paperback)
This edition is based on Mathers translation but information from other versions of the Key of Solomon is added which makes this version much more complete. The notes by the translator are also very valuable.

There are other versions of the Key of Solomon on the way that will probably be better then this one but at the moment I would recomend this version over Mathers anytime. The price is also very good.

Excellent book! This book was much easier to read and to follow than the American Version. It also had additional information that was interesting to read. I highly recommend reading this book if you are into higher magic. For the first time, I understand what I am doing. It explains why it is necessary to keep track of the hour, planets, signs, angels, colors, herbs, and incense....to make it easier to conjure up spirits. And we all know how hard that can be! So we need all the help we can get! And this book gives you the help you are looking for!
