About the Author

Marsh Muirhead is a photographer and writer, former freight pilot and flight instructor, scuba diver, retired bodybuilder, and part-time dentist who has been coming to Key West in all seasons for all reasons since 1986. He has written for various magazines on travel, auto racing, and aviation. His poetry and fiction have been published in Carolina Quarterly, The Southeast Review, the secret of salt, Modern Haiku, and elsewhere. He publishes and edits The Island Journal on the banks of the Mississippi River, near Bemidji, Minnesota where he lives.

Key West is so much more than just a touristy destination. When I visited four years ago as a first timer, I did all the things first timers do...Duval Street, Margaritaville, hangovers (not really recommended, but a certain result of the above!) and pool side R & R. This book reveals the less well known, but much more pleasing side of Key West's art, culture, ecological beauty and charm ~ opening all the doors for a wonderful, fun vacation of wide diversity and enjoyment for every traveler. The book is like getting advice from your well traveled buddy who really wants you to have a great time and discover the things he's found. Funny commentary and fabulous photography!

I have been to Key West a couple of times and certainly wish I would have had Muirhead's "Key West Explained" travel guide for those trips. His book will help folks who want to create their own vacation and truly enjoy their time in Key West. Read this book before you head down, to get a flavor for the place, then take the book with you to get the most out of your vacation days and nights. This book covers all of the basics (hotels, dining, entertainment) but also conveys Muirhead's passion for Key West; his insightful, entertaining commentary helps to make this book not only useful, but an enjoyable literary read. Check out especially the Glossary section, where you see Muirhead not only explaining terms but having (and poking!) good fun. You'll love it--and you'll no doubt want to start packing for Key West!

This is a well-written little book, fun to read and chock full of information. A very honest portrayal, told with real affection for all that Key West is...the good, the bad and the beautiful. There are Key West guides with more detailed information...but this is something else. This book gives you a sense of the place; it captures the essence of Key West in a way that will help you decided if this is the place for you. Read this book first!
