Kristin received the Bachelor of Music from Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts in 1990 and the Master of Music from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1996. During her graduate studies, she was awarded a teaching assistantship in Music History and Literature with a specialization in American folk music and Ethnomusicology. Her Master's thesis is a biographical song analysis of her grandmother's repertoire, which represents the influence of early American radio on the oral folk tradition.
Kristin began teaching as an instructor at the National Guitar Workshop in 1998. Kristin performs solo and ensemble work in the Northeast, where she plays a wide variety of music, ranging from rock to classical. She is currently working on original compositions for an upcoming recording. She plays piano, guitar, flute, bass, mandolin and the Appalachian mountain dulcimer.
You will learn how to play basic five-note melodies in both the right- and left-hand C positions. Then you will learn how to play melodies on the grand staff, with one hand playing a melody while the other hand accompanies with either single notes or chords. Left-hand accompaniment patterns are presented in a variety of styles and provide a complimentary harmonic background for the melodies.
The major scale is outlined in detail so that you will learn how music is constructed. Half steps and whole steps are explained through helpful keyboard and staff diagrams to help you to navigate your way around the piano keyboard.
Any kind of keyboard is appropriate for learning how to play, whether it is a grand piano or an electronic keyboard. The best types of electronic keyboards are those that have weighted keys, which serve to simulate the physical action of playing a real piano.
Learning how to play keyboard requires patience and diligence, but the rewards are great if you work hard. Good luck!
