Book Description

0810826453 978-0810826458 June 1993
An Irish bandmaster named Joseph Haliday added woodwind-style keys to the military bugle in 1810. The invention created a flexible brass instrument that was widely used in bands, opera, social orchestras, parlor music, and even circus music. This book is the definitive study of the keyed bugle and its role in European and American music in the 19th century. Dudgeon provides essential information on keyed bugle makers, performers, method books, and solo and ensemble music. Chapter topics include the keyed bugle in Europe and in the United States, the revival, methods, literature, performance practice, and makers and sellers. Bibliography and index.

Editorial Reviews

Review

For early music enthusiasts, this book is packed with information on the keyed bugle... (The Horn Call )

...with this splendid little book Ralph T. Dudgeon rescues the keyed bugle from oblivion...Dudgeon's study represents a significant addition to the history of music... (Journal Of The American Musical Instrument Society )

We should be grateful that Dudgeon has given us such a thorough compilation of keyed bugle history, at a time when there is no textbook devoted to...the flugel horn... (The Galpin Society )

Dudgeon succeeds in providing us with a solid background of the keyed bugle...not only a fine historical source but a guide book for anyone interested in attempting to purchase, study or commit further research to the subject. A very extensive bibliography is included as well as a helpful index...very highly recommended... (Nacwpi Journal )

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and interesting read, October 17, 1997

Mr Dudgeon's book was very informative. It was refreshing to read a book on a somewhat narrow subject that contained so many outside references and was written in an accessible yet scholarly manner. It literally made me want to go out and buy one so I could appreciate the nuances of performance Mr. Dudgeon so carefully and thoughtfully elucidated. I highly recommend this book to anyone with even a faint interest in the history and development of brass instruments or the history of US popular music

This review is from: The Keyed Bugle (Hardcover)
Ralph Dudgeon's book, "The Keyed Bugle", is the definitive work on the subject. Still, the 1st edition had many errors, and in the 2nd edition Dudgeon has corrected those errors in addition to expanding the scope of the book.
