Mr Dudgeon's book was very informative. It was refreshing to read a book on a somewhat narrow subject that contained so many outside references and was written in an accessible yet scholarly manner. It literally made me want to go out and buy one so I could appreciate the nuances of performance Mr. Dudgeon so carefully and thoughtfully elucidated.I highly recommend this book to anyone with even a faint interest in the history and development of brass instruments or the history of US popular music

Ralph Dudgeon's book, "The Keyed Bugle", is the definitive work on the subject. Still, the 1st edition had many errors, and in the 2nd edition Dudgeon has corrected those errors in addition to expanding the scope of the book.
