Book Description

The Trouble with Dead People Today is They Have no Sense of Decorum....
Get ready for Keys to the Coven, a tightly plotted, witty urban fantasy/romance set in an original universe where karma is power, sex is karma, and it's not who you know but whose soul you own that matters.*

To become a demon, you must die in complete and utter despair. Three hundred years ago, Max passed that test with flying colors and joined the afterlife resolving never again to have innocent blood on his hands. Now Max has been given the job of breaking a young witch's family curse. But what she doesn't know, what Max can't bring himself to tell her, is that completing his mission almost certainly means her death.
--------------------------
*Caution: This book contains violence, strong sexual themes, moderately explicit sex between consenting adults, (unfulfilled) threats against children, and one completely gratuitous reference to unicorns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take this one for a spin! August 27, 2012
By Doyne
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one of those very rare, very wonderful, books that give me hope for both the genre and the current self-publishing traffic jam. The easy road is not taken here; buckle your seatbelt! Ms. Loebel is one of those incredibly skilled writers who make it look easy to write believable dialogue from a demon or a newly minted angel. Combined with a fast pace, truly funny twists and turns, and an intriguing story line, and you've got a wild ride! I don't usually give 5 stars to anything, but this book ended up being at least 4-3/4, so I rounded up. I hope this is not the last book we see from this very talented first-time author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots to Like August 16, 2012
By tenaya
Format:Kindle Edition
Things I love about this book:

* the characters - Max and Felicity, in particular, are well realized and when they are put to the test, as they are by this author (who tightens the screws!), they rise to the challenge in ways that could cost them a great deal.

* the humor - there are very dark moments in this novel, but a lively and original humor provides relief from that darkness and a lot of reading pleasure.

* the pacing - the plot kept me guessing from the first pages. Along the way, the author takes the pressure off the suspense at just about the point where this reader HAD to have the release. But the novel builds to a big conclusion in a rapid series of shocks and after-shocks and I couldn't put it down.

* there are things that are almost throwaways here that would make a whole book for some other writer. Like Max's sensations as he's driving into the city in his Bugatti Veyron. (Read the book to see what I mean.)

* the Bugatti Veyron :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars I was a bit confused but totally engaged by this book. November 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was a bit confused but totally engaged by this book. Yep, that's what I said...confused but engaged. I never thought I'd say that--never even thought those two words could live happily together in my brain about a book. But there it is.

This book has a deliciously complicated plot. There are a lot of rules about how Karma works and the hierarchy of witches, demons, demis, and Hell. I liked all that. The author created an interesting world and I thought it gave the story some uniqueness as I don't recall reading a story that approached the use of Karma like that. Not saying that there isn't one out there, but if there is then I haven't read it yet. However, this is also one of the things that got confusing about the story. A glossary at the end of the book to explain a lot of these concepts and the characters/creatures in the story would have been very helpful and I'm sure I would have referenced it several times.(See addendum at the end of this review). These things were also explained as the story evolved but it was often in bits and pieces and I had to keep backtracking and trying to find where something explained. Did I mention a glossary would have been helpful? Many PNR/UF books with complicated worlds or characters do this and I always end up referencing it. Finally I just gave up and went with the flow hoping it would all make sense later. And for the most part, it did. Twists and turns and double-crosses abound in this book (well there are demons after all!). You'll need to read closely to keep up.

Another thing that may have contributed to being a little confused other than the plot was the writing style. Sometimes the way things were explained didn't always feel very clear and the style of dialog didn't always suit me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised and impressed November 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a delightful read; part demonic/paranormal fantasy, part romance, with lots of good action and clever writing. It adds some unique elements into the supernatural order of demons and angels. The hero is a lovable-but-damned self-loathing demon (which will appeal to anyone who likes 'vampire with a conscience' characters.) It builds well, is finely crafted, and very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and Engaging January 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Keys to the Coven is laugh-out-loud funny. I give this review with a beverage alert, because at one point I actually laughed so hard I snorted Diet Pepsi out my nose. I absolutely love Max, the demon with the heart of slightly tarnished gold. He was well-written and fully realized. It took me more time to warm to Felicity, but eventually she won me over. This book has an interesting and non-predictable plot, which kept me giggling and turning pages as I inhaled it in one setting. The excerpts from the Girl's Guide to Demons are viciously witty. Ms. Loebel is a wonderful writer with a strong comedic voice and a solid grasp of storytelling. I hope to see more from her soon.
