Great book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Keys to Toilet Training (Barron's Parenting Keys) (Paperback)
I really like this book, we've only just started the toilet training process - I have an, at present, very keen 2 yr old boy - and this book provides a gradual, non threatening, (to either child or parent, I'm more apprehensive than my son who will happily spend hours on the toilet trying to force himself to pee!) caring approach based on the work of T. Berry Brazelton whose book Touchpoints was one of my favourites. I didn't like the idea of putting him directly into underpants, even part time, as proposed by Jan Faull in "Mommy I have to go Potty" and this book gave me an alternative which I feel is more appropriate to my son's age and stage of development.

I started really urine training my daughter at 17 months (and had her doing BM on the toilet at a year). While this book had tons of information for the later trainer, there was not much at all for the younger child, other than the typical list of "readiness signs". I still give it four stars because if my daughter were maybe 3 or 4 years old, this book would be invaluable. There is lots of information on how to motivate an older child, how to deal with particular problems and temporary setbacks, etc. It does not give one definite "way" to train, but rather suggests many possible routes along the way and emphasizes that each child is different and will be more or less successful depending on the route. If you're starting at an earlier age, I'd look somewhere else. My child has all the readiness signs, but is not old enough to be motivated by "pretty panties" or "friends at preschool", nor is old enough to give me major temper tantrums or refusal to go.

Practical and simple. Has many real life examples.,

This book presents an approach based on the individual child. It also offers ideas on how to not get desperate when things don't work as planned. The technique goes from the basic letting the child get acquainted with the potty to more specific problems such as the half trained child.

toilet training without an argument!,

We were under a lot of pressure to toilet train our child for his pre-school. I don't think we could have done it without the wise advice in this book. Once we really understood what we were doing and had a plan, we relaxed. And, not surprisingly, our son was trained well ahead of time.

A basic book for training older children,
This review is from: Keys to Toilet Training (Barron's Parenting Keys) (Paperback)
This book might be most helpful if you have a 3 or 4 year old and you are just starting the process as it states that is the age when children are logical and goal oriented. It's not really a step-by-step guide as the back cover states.

We bought this book because we liked the author's book about two year olds. This book has made a huge difference. We were on the way to serious problems, and the suggestions in the book changed everything. This book is so short and simple but it covers everything!

Just Okay,
This review is from: Keys to Toilet Training (Barron's Parenting Keys) (Paperback)
The first chapters of the book are helpful, telling you how to begin potty training. After that, it discusses several options for different types of training. It does a good job discussing the pros and cons of each type but in the end, I was as confused and overwhelmed as I was before reading the book. I was looking for a book with a whole plan of action so that is why I say this book is just okay.

Nothing new, but still good advice,
This review is from: Keys to Toilet Training (Barron's Parenting Keys) (Paperback)
This book is easy to read and informative. However, you can find most of the same information in parenting magazines or online. I bought it at a time when I thought my son would never be potty-trained. It was good reassurance to have this book on hand. Frankly, none of the advice actaully helped me to potty train my son. It just made me feel more in control of the situation. Eventually, I just realized he had to do it at his own pace.
