Editorial Reviews

The Jerry Garcia Band - Garcia, his frequent collaborator bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt - played its first show with Nicky Hopkins on piano in August 1975. The ultimate session player, Hopkins' credits include work with the Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Jefferson Airplane to name a very few. While Hopkins' residency was brief with the Jerry Garcia Band, it played an important role in the group's shift away from big jams toward song-oriented material.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT album, but don't buy it here!!!, August 29, 2009

This CD, along with ALL the titles in the Pure Jerry series are now available again, over at the Dead's official site (dead.net). Don't pay the outrageous prices the crooks selling "new & used" copies here are asking for.

As for this set, recorded at Keystone in '74 is probably my favorite CD in the series. Jerry & Merl were always magical together, and if you like jazzy, jamming grooves this one's for you. There's "unknown" trumpet player on this show, and I'd love to know who it was. I doubt it was Miles Davis, but it sounds like it could've been him. He did share a bill with the GD at Fillmore West once, and he dug what the Dead were doing. So who knows?

Just buy the CD from [...] and save yourself a bunch of money.

Sunday, September 1st finds the Garcia/Saunders Band playing a show at the small Keystone in Berkeley, California. The Dead would start what might be their last tour of Europe in a week with shows at the Alexandra Palace in England Dick's Picks, Vol. 7: Alexandra Palace, London, England, 9/9-9/11/74. The Garcia/Saunders Band was, at this time: Jerry Garcia, Merl Saunders, John Kahn, Martin Fierro and Paul Humphrey. The sound quality on this release is very good.

This release is made up of most of the line up that would become Legion Of Mary replacing Lawrence Welk drummer Paul Humphrey with Elvis' Ron Tutt for Legion Of Mary. This show starts off with a great version of Neighbor, Neighbor while Finders' Keepers sounds slightly off to me. Sitting In Limbo starts off a little shakey with Martin busy slapping his face and making other "effects". The song does find it's footing and ends in a fine fashion. this version of Favela goes on a bit too long with both John Kahn Paul Humphrey sounding like they may have tried to end it several minutes before it actually does. Tough Mama is real fun and ends the set (early show?) on a nice note.

The next set starts with a great long flowing version of Martin's La-La. The Someday Baby is a great version and is followed by Think. (I'm A) Roadrunner is a fantastic song that would be covered by both Garcia and Weir in side projects as well as making a couple of appearences at Dead shows in the Spring of '86. The Harder They Come and I Second That Emoton are both played very well. While, the rare and seldom played Going, Going, Gone by Bob Dylan is a treat.

Merl's Soul Roach is nice while Mystery Train gets a rocking workout. Wondering Why is good with a long jam and is followed by People Make The World Go 'Round. Keystone Jam is quite good and does a good job at letting everyone show their chops. It's Too Late is a treat while The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down ends this release in fine fashion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing jams!, July 19, 2011
This review is from: Keystone Berkeley: September 1, 1974 (Audio CD)
This is my favorite Pure Jerry in the entire series, it jams. This is some amazing music, the sax and Merl on keyboards makes a dynamic sound, you will love it. Hopefully more of this stuff will be released on down the road when all the legal BS is over with. Sure bet for any fan.
