4.0 out of 5 stars Light and Enjoyable, March 6, 2002
This review is from: Khachaturian: Gayaneh / Masquerade / Spartacus (Audio CD)
Lazarev conducts excerpts of the music of Khachaturian. The gawky Sabre Dance begins this set - what Lazarev lacks in showmanship playing this ubiquitous headache he more than makes up for in virility. The rest of the pieces are handled with more sensitivity. A good deal of the music on this disc is really a pleasant surprise. From the tender orchestration and sinewy melody line of Ayshe's Awakening to the balmy satisfaction of the stunningly beautiful Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia. The Waltz from Masquerade has a one-of-a-kind melody line. Khachaturian's sometimes pedestrian compositional style is offset by his stylishly lush orchestration. Though it is not the greatest music ever written, I would recommend this disc if you enjoy the simple pleasures of Glazunov, Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky.
