This is a very fine recording. The music is very exciting and the selections are paced very well. Mr. Aram Khachaturian is excelent at bringing the local curtural color into his compositions. In spite of Soviet restrictions on a composers "politicaly correctness" the genius shows through. If you like Prokofiev, you will find this one to be very much to your liking. Scott

of the Spartacus ballet is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Well worth the cost of the CD, and yet the rest of the music is superb as well.

After watching "The Hudsucker Proxy" a few times, I was intrigued by the music, so I spent the time to watch and read the credits. That's where the name Aram Khatchaturian crossed my path.
This album distills the essence of much of the score to that movie, but it is interesting music in its own right, as well. Reading the liner notes gives some background on the stories being told - one (Gayaneh) celebrating a young woman in a farm collective (this was written during the Soviet era). This is an excellent recording overall. If you want some interesting, dramatic music with an Eastern twist, you've come to the right place.
