Eternal Dirge - An Enigma

Eternal Dirge is a German band that has been around from 1986 to 1996ev. The band (or rather their leader, Timo Knopf) was deeply entangled in the occult scene and was rumored to belong to a certain semi-secret magickal order that derived its authority directly from Aleister Crowley, the (in)famous black magician, poet, mountaineer and self-styled prophet of the "New Aeon", which Eternal Dirge advertised in their songs.

Khaos Magick is the band's last output and shows the perfection of their style in both music and lyrics (or, as ED call it "Musick & Lyricks"). This masterpiece of non-trendy death metal has it all: raging riffs, blasting beats, sinister screams and ghasty growls. But there's more. A strange feeling of lovecraftesque morbidity is evoked by the unusual harmonies Eternal Dirge develop. A putrid passion for the darker mysteries of magic(k). The synths are carefully arranged not to disturb the fine guitar work, and add a strange note here and there.

As for the lyrics, these are beyond comprehension for most of the casual listeners -- the initiate will, according to Timo Knopf, find occult knowledge spread throughout the lines.

Maybe he meant this?

"My long, winging flight through the void / I have to cross the universe of light / To claim what was, is and will be mine / An infinite quest through endless time"

Who knows?

Sincerely, Bob Black
