I can only comment on Khartoum in this case, not having seen MS.
There is simply no better score for a film than Khartoum. Atmospheric, stylish and melodramatic the score will lift you high and move you to near-tears.....AWESOME!

5.0 out of 5 stars From the era of glorious movie scores!, September 15, 2008

The title theme from Khartoum is thrilling, glorious, and magnificent. I can imagine sitting in the Cinerama dome in Hollywood in 1965 and being totally immersed in this widescreen spectacle. I have always thought that the beginning of theme sounds like Wagner's Siegfried's Rhine Journey, and the second theme sounds like a William Walton march--absolutely beautiful. The Mosquito squadron title is no less superb, and when I watched the DVD I thought the composer was Ron Goodwin, who wrote the "633 Squadron" music.
