5.0 out of 5 stars I WAS THERE, June 3, 2001
I was a marine at Khe Sanh for the entire siege. The Book is a good accounting of the horror of the siege. I was with the 1st battalion ninth marines at rock quarry at Khe Sanh. It provides a view of what happened to those who endured the siege and for these give their all at Khe Sanh. Semper Fi

4.0 out of 5 stars This Marine Unit was there also, December 29, 2005
This review is from: Khe Sanh: Siege In The Clouds (Paperback)
While I found the book to be very factual and informative and, without a doubt, from my Marine perspective, at times very painful, I was very dismayed to find no reference at all to 3rd Batallion, 4th Marines, that was also in the hills of Khe Sanh. Near the end of the seige, my unit, Lima Company, 3rd Batallion, 4th Marines, occupied and lost Marines on Hill 689. We also helped the Army on Hill 552 when they were getting hit in March, 1968. That being said, despite this oversight, it is a very good book and a must read for those who desire to have a ground level view of that major battle. I was also medevaced to the U.S.S. Repose, ending my time there before my unit returned to Dong Ha. Semper Fi Jim R., Sr.

I got this book based on some of the reviews i had seen here, and i wasn't disappointed. This compliation of the stories taken from the soldiers that were there is very touching view of what they experienced day by day. Life, death, luck, and no so good luck stories abound. Excellent reading that really made my heart beat fast, while saddening me many times. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A testament to the U.S. Marine Corps fighting spirit., March 1, 1999
By A Customer
I have read many books about military history and about the war in Vietnam in particular. This is by far one of the most emotionally wrought and amazing books I have ever read. The tales from the marines own words are amazing. You are given a great insight into the amazing odds they were fighting, and their undaunted spirit and determination to survive and win.

5.0 out of 5 stars I think this is the best book on the subject I've read, December 22, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
In the last couple of years, for lots of reasons,
I've spent many hours reading about and researching the "Khe Sanh and Hill Fights experience".

I guess I've read at least 10 books on the subject, many that I bought here on Amazon.
I've read all kinds of internet articles and blogs by those who were there.
I also had the recent opportunity to conduct a four hour interview of a
grade school friend of mine who was there during the entire seige with Lima Company, 3/26.

In my opinion, this book does the best job of describing for you what happened and what it was like to be there.
These experiences are directly from the mouths of the Marines (and a few Army and Air Force guys) who were there.

The personal experiences and comments are chronologically arranged
so that you can follow along with what happened in the exact order that it happened.

One guy on patrol is talking about requesting artillery support from the battery back at the combat base.
The next thing you read is the actual guy who receieved the request talking about how they did it.

Despite everything I've read and seen .....
I still can't understand how these guys lived through this.

I know ..... I KNOW ..... I could not have done it.
Nope.
At the age of 19 ..... no way.
I was way too immature.
How these guys pulled it off .............. I don't know.

Many of them struggle today with what they experienced.
The things they saw and can't forget about ..... to this day.

God bless them all.

Somewhere along the line, I read a statement made by someone who "understands".

They said:

"Every last dime these guys (who served at Khe Sanh, 1967-1968) ever receive from the US Government,
whether it's in the form of money or care or employment programs, whatever .....
THEY EARNED (for perpetuity) when they were 19 years old."

Based on what I've learned from this book, and others like it, I agree 100% with his statement.

This book comes the closest to making it real.
