5.0 out of 5 stars Actually, August 17, 2006
This review is from: KiRite (Audio CD)
This is mislabeled as game music. It's the soundtrack to a Japanese novel believe it or not. The book is written by Masato Kato of Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross fame. I can't comment on the book since it wasn't translated. The book and music were also adapted as a play, which performed in the Theatre Sun Mall in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

As far as this album goes in my opinion Yasunori Mitsuda really out does himself. If you are a fan on Mitsuda's work then this is a must have for you. Yasunori Mitsuda is mostly known for his video game sountrack work, but honestly I believe his music stands up well enough on it's own. I often listen to his sountracks while I'm stuck in traffic on the way to work. He has a very calm, folkish, celtic sound to him. It's hard to explain. He's sort of created a style that is uniquely his own.

Tracks:

Is Kirite Burning? - This is a vocal track and I believe the vocals really work well in this song. It's a good opening for the album. It starts off slow then speeds up as the song progresses sort of creating a sense of urgency. (9.5/10)

Volfino City - This is a nice theme for what is apparently a city. It has a sort of uplifting sound to it. The music box sounds and the strings makes this track really stand out. It ends as quietly and serenely as it begins. Nice touch.(9/10)

Promise of the Wind ~ Where the Petals Are - Another vocal track. Sometimes Mitsuda's Vocal tracks are sub-par when compared to the rest of the Album. Sailing to the World's vocal version comes to mind. Fortunately I believe this track is perfect. It's got a very strong sound to it. It's a great sort of melancholy track. (9.5/10)

Lapis Lazuli Forest - Wow does this track establish ambiance or what? It really makes you feel like you are walking through the Lapis forest. Sort of a foreboding overtone. It makes the forest seem like a mysterious and dangerous place. (9.5/10)

Blue Sky - Another Vocal Track. This is honestly a beautiful track. It has a very memorable sound to it. Mitsuda's vocal tracks are 3 for 3 so far. (10/10)

Sneering Drawn Blade - The beginning of this track has a very sinister sound to it. Then toward the end of the track it breaks out into a sad piano theme. Really a great track. I'm particularly a fan of the second half of the track. (9.5/10)

Melody of the Moon - This track has sort of a religious sound to it. I can almost envision this song being sung during a religous service. It does have a very lunar feel to it. (9/10)

Encounter ~ Curtain of Darkness - This is my favorite track on the whole album. It's an exciting track. It really draws a picture of conflict with it's fast pace and the violin is just wonderful here. The intro is amazing. (10/10)

Nocturne - This is a sad track. It's probably my second favorite track. It gives me goosebumps sometimes. It's got sort of a simple sound to it, but you can feel the emotion behind it. (10/10)

Dying Autumn - I love the wind instruments here. It really adds alot to the track. Another track that conveys the sense of conflict. Does a good job in my opinion. (9/10)

The Snow's Howl - Another track that establishes ambiance well. It has a desolate feeling to it. Even though it's my least favorite track on the album it's still a great track. I want to grade hard here but even this track is great. I really like the whole album. (9/10)

Trees of Prayer - Another holy sounding theme. This track conveys more mystery than Melody of the Moon. It features alot exotic chime and bell noises muted in the background. Unlike Melody of the Moon this is not a vocal track. I like this track better honestly. (9.5/10)

The Name of Hope - Another great vocal track. We are getting toward the end of the album and as the name suggests this track feels hopeful. I wish I could read enough Japanese to know what the conflict is. (10/10)

Eternal Ring - As this songs name suggests we do have sort of a circular theme going on here in that this song loops us back to the beginning of the album with it's serene simple music box style. It's almost like a lullaby. (10/10)

Well there you have it. This is my second favorite Yasunori Mitsuda album. My favorite is the Chrono Cross sountrack. This album is smaller than the Chrono Cross album and is more consistently high in quality, where the Chrono Cross album has more stand out tracks, but is a little uneven as far as quality in my opinion. You can see a sort of maturity between these two albums. Kirite, the newer of the two albums, feels like a more polished coherent product. If you enjoyed this check out the Chrono Cross OST, Chrono Trigger OST, An Cinniuint, Sailing to the World or Xenogears Creid. All worth owning.
