4.0 out of 5 stars Hometown hearthrob band makes my heart warm..., February 6, 2006
This review is from: Kick Upstairs (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
I'm going to love looking back at the Lonely H and saying "I knew those guys in high school! Back when Mark had the long hair and when they were rocking with shows in the Student Center..." But honestly, I've been a fan since I first heard them, which I can't really remember and isn't really relevant to this review...

"Kick Upstairs" has some great tunes. If you've heard their "Live at the EMP" album from the EMP's Soundoff! then this one will be a huge improvement - their sound is tighter and the vocals are smoother - everything overall is better defined. Nothing beats the excitement of a live concert, however, and I've seen them perform so many times (at the high school, The Upside, EMP, Juan de Fuca Festival, etc...) that I prefer their live sound - it's heavier and you just get that rush from being with the crowd (that's always full of devoted fans).

That being said, this album is still great. The album starts out a little poppish and light with some catchy tunes, but it picks up with some irresistible beats and hooks. My favorites are "Dranconius" (I love that beat), "Ken" (with Johnny on the harmonica), and "Family Friends." And who wouldn't love "Simple Love" with Mark on the keyboard and Colin playing the cello? Well anyone who's a girl, anyhow... :) And I do enjoy "Zelda" that yes, is named after the game. They're all great tracks, though, and this album is worth getting just to support these guys. Plus you get the bonus DVD by Miles Burnett, who's also from Port Angeles and friends with the band. It's a cool insider's look into the band and has some great footage of some of their shows.

It's not completely perfect, but it's a great first album for the Lonely H. I was stuck in the car for about 4 hours with this being one of the only two albums I had to listen to, and I never grew tired of it.

Ben, Eric, Johnny, Mark and Colin - well done. Seriously. Port Angeles and its fine folks are quite proud.
