3.0 out of 5 stars Below average but 2 good fights at the end, December 23, 2006
This review is from: Kickboxer (DVD)
The movie I am reviewing is not the Jean Claude Van Damme movie and it is not the movie that Philip Ko directed. I thought I would point that out since both of those movies go by the same name.

Wu Ma directs and co stars in this Yuen Biao movie. Biao is actually playing the same character he does in 'Once Upon A TIme In China'. Wong Fei-Hong doesn't show up but that just means we get to see Biao more than usual which I can't complain about. Unfortunately the movie has a VERY tired story about opium smuggling and the action tries to be like the 'Once Upon A Time In China' series with a lot of smoke and mirrors. There is quite a bit of action but even Yen Shi-Kwan vs. Yuen Wah is a below average match! The movie is not horrible but I only found it enjoyable for the action which wasn't even that great. The final 2 fights though take it to another level. Of course Chang Shan(Shaolin Vs. Lama) is my favorite kung fu actor ever and he tends to always make an impact on my rating so just to warn you I am biased about this movie. Chang Shan vs. Yuen Biao I thought was the highlight of the film. Brief, but great stuff going on. The final fight is good, Yuen Wah and Biao are always good together, though for possibly the 2 greatest stuntmen ever, it was a bit dissapointing.

The version I have from World Video has a bad picture quality and it is full screened(not quite all of the way:)though I was able to read all of the subtitles.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a review of the MOVIE "Kickboxer" NOT the DVD, January 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Kickboxer (DVD)
I own this movie on VHS (have not seen the DVD version yet) so I apologize, but this review only covers the movie itself and not the format. I have seen most of Jean Claude Van Damme's movies and this is definitely one of his best, right up there with gems like "Bloodsport" and "The Quest". So if you're a martial arts fan I definitely recommend this one. The story is simple yet effective, with some curious sub-plots. The fighting is first class. What makes this movie even more interesting is that appearantly it was filmed on location in Thailand, so you'll see kickboxers training in a real "Muay Thai" Gym, VanDamme drinking beer in a Bangkok Go-Go Bar complete with exotic dancers, VanDamme training in the jungle, fighting in the local village bar etc. All the other characters in this movie including his brother (Dennis Alexio), his master (Dennis Chan) and his main adversary (Michel Qissi) do a fine job of acting and fighting.
What more can I say? I have watched this movie about 20 times with my 10 year old son (who is also taking martial arts) and we both love it!
