This review is from: Kickbutt:Kick Boxing Video Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
For a beginner, this video may be quite challenging physically, but the sequences are easy to catch on to. The music correlates with the moves, and was very energizing and fun. Although the cueing wasn't always very clear, since the sequences were not complicated, it was no problem to catch on late. There was no instructional segment, but veteran kickboxers will appreciate not having to fast-forward through them. The cardio section, featuring lots of leg lifts, front kicks, and of course, loads and loads of jabs, is quite exciting. The moves change often enough to keep boredom at bay. I felt my abdominal muscles really working, since I pay attention to them and use them in my kicks. After the warmup and cardio segment and a short cooldown, they move on to a challenging set of arm, chest, and back exercises. They recommend 5-10 pound weights. My arms were worn out after that, and each segment worked the focus muscle to exhaustion. I plan on doing this video every other day just for this muscle-building segment. After the arms, chest, and back, Badrino moves to a series of abdominal exercises. These will probably not be challenging to people who have already been working their abdominals for a while. Finally, there is a long, but not boring, series of stretches. That man sure is flexible. I think my body will become far more flexible in time, and that flexibility is necessary for high kicks. I think men would enjoy this workout as well as women. There are no dancy moves, and the arms and chest section focuses on parts that men are concerned about (pecs and biceps). In addition, there are two male exercisers and only one female. I am personally not a man, so this is just my humble opinion. Badrino's cueing could be a bit louder, but I like him. He has the same kind of charisma that Billy Blanks has. Besides, I think he's got a great body, and I certainly don't mind watching him. He's also encouraging, which is nice.

Great Intro to Kickboxing, January 1, 2002

My friend and I were trying to find ways to add variety to our workout routine at the gym. Since everyone was raving about Tae Bo, we tried that first. I hated it! I know I am in the minority, but I just wasn't feeling it at all. The owner of the gym then suggested we try Kick Butt. We loved it! I really like Kick Butt because it's easy to follow, only 45 minutes long (25 if you do the kickboxing section only) and it starts off low impact, with the intensity gradually building up as the workout goes on. Believe me, you will feel the burn in your thighs! Kickboxing give the abs an intense workout also. I saw results in 3 weeks! Kickboxing champ Badrino Kocktane leads the video. Jackie, a fitness consultant, does the voice overs (which gives some pointers on proper form) and Kristoff St. John of the Young and the Restless does the intros for each section of the video. You have to listen carefully for Badrino's cues because his voice is soft. Jackie and Kristoff do slightly different variations of the video, which is good if you have little or no kickboxing experience. This tape is good for beginners and intermediates. It is one of my favorites and I still use it. I look forward to trying Kick Butt 2.

nice overall workout but not particularly challenging..., August 17, 2001
This review is from: Kickbutt:Kick Boxing Video Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a nice video to have in your library because it kinda covers a lot of ground. There's the warm up, the aerobic "high impact" kickboxing segment, the weights segment, the abs segment, and the cool down. I don't think it's particularly challenging for someone who's already fit because the most aerobic part of the workout isn't really all that aerobic and doesn't last all that long--Fifteen, maybe twenty minutes max. It's over before it really even begins. That said, if you're only starting to work out, or if you only want to do a half hour's worth of real exercise, this is a great video. I find it particularly helpful when I've stopped working out for a while, and then start up again (like after a vacation). I usually need a couple of "light" workouts to build up my level of fitness again. So I'll run through this video for a couple days just to get back into "fitness mode." Once I get back into exercising on a regular basis, however, I never use this tape all the way through. But that doesn't mean it goes unused either. Currently, I'm on a running kick, and usually after a run, I'll pop in the video, and do the last three segments. It's a great way to get in a little strength training, ab work, and cool down after a serious aerobic workout. All in all, I think this is a great video to have because no matter what your level of fitness, it'll serve some purpose because parts of it can easily be incorporated into your other workout routines. Of course, I wouldn't bank on this being the only work-out video in your collection either, especially if you want a cardio workout. If you can only have one, and you're serious about your cardio, Tae Bo's Advance Workout (the original one) is guaranteed to kick some butt!
