4.0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Kickboxing
My friend and I were trying to find ways to add variety to our workout routine at the gym. Since everyone was raving about Tae Bo, we tried that first. I hated it! I know I am in the minority, but I just wasn't feeling it at all. The owner of the gym then suggested we try Kick Butt. We loved it! I really like Kick Butt because it's easy to follow, only 45 minutes...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Funny, July 15, 2003
This review is from: Kickbutt:Kick Boxing Video Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
For a beginner, this video may be quite challenging physically, but the sequences are easy to catch on to. The music correlates with the moves, and was very energizing and fun. Although the cueing wasn't always very clear, since the sequences were not complicated, it was no problem to catch on late. There was no instructional segment, but veteran kickboxers will appreciate not having to fast-forward through them.

The cardio section, featuring lots of leg lifts, front kicks, and of course, loads and loads of jabs, is quite exciting. The moves change often enough to keep boredom at bay. I felt my abdominal muscles really working, since I pay attention to them and use them in my kicks.

After the warmup and cardio segment and a short cooldown, they move on to a challenging set of arm, chest, and back exercises. They recommend 5-10 pound weights. My arms were worn out after that, and each segment worked the focus muscle to exhaustion. I plan on doing this video every other day just for this muscle-building segment.

After the arms, chest, and back, Badrino moves to a series of abdominal exercises. These will probably not be challenging to people who have already been working their abdominals for a while.

Finally, there is a long, but not boring, series of stretches. That man sure is flexible. I think my body will become far more flexible in time, and that flexibility is necessary for high kicks.

I think men would enjoy this workout as well as women. There are no dancy moves, and the arms and chest section focuses on parts that men are concerned about (pecs and biceps). In addition, there are two male exercisers and only one female. I am personally not a man, so this is just my humble opinion.

Badrino's cueing could be a bit louder, but I like him. He has the same kind of charisma that Billy Blanks has. Besides, I think he's got a great body, and I certainly don't mind watching him. He's also encouraging, which is nice.

I really like Kick Butt because it's easy to follow, only 45 minutes long (25 if you do the kickboxing section only) and it starts off low impact, with the intensity gradually building up as the workout goes on. Believe me, you will feel the burn in your thighs! Kickboxing give the abs an intense workout also. I saw results in 3 weeks! Kickboxing champ Badrino Kocktane leads the video. Jackie, a fitness consultant, does the voice overs (which gives some pointers on proper form) and Kristoff St. John of the Young and the Restless does the intros for each section of the video. You have to listen carefully for Badrino's cues because his voice is soft. Jackie and Kristoff do slightly different variations of the video, which is good if you have little or no kickboxing experience. This tape is good for beginners and intermediates. It is one of my favorites and I still use it. I look forward to trying Kick Butt 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice overall workout but not particularly challenging..., August 17, 2001

This is a nice video to have in your library because it kinda covers a lot of ground. There's the warm up, the aerobic "high impact" kickboxing segment, the weights segment, the abs segment, and the cool down. I don't think it's particularly challenging for someone who's already fit because the most aerobic part of the workout isn't really all that aerobic and doesn't last all that long--Fifteen, maybe twenty minutes max. It's over before it really even begins.

That said, if you're only starting to work out, or if you only want to do a half hour's worth of real exercise, this is a great video. I find it particularly helpful when I've stopped working out for a while, and then start up again (like after a vacation). I usually need a couple of "light" workouts to build up my level of fitness again. So I'll run through this video for a couple days just to get back into "fitness mode." Once I get back into exercising on a regular basis, however, I never use this tape all the way through. But that doesn't mean it goes unused either. Currently, I'm on a running kick, and usually after a run, I'll pop in the video, and do the last three segments. It's a great way to get in a little strength training, ab work, and cool down after a serious aerobic workout.

All in all, I think this is a great video to have because no matter what your level of fitness, it'll serve some purpose because parts of it can easily be incorporated into your other workout routines. Of course, I wouldn't bank on this being the only work-out video in your collection either, especially if you want a cardio workout. If you can only have one, and you're serious about your cardio, Tae Bo's Advance Workout (the original one) is guaranteed to kick some butt!

I purchased kick butt 6 months ago and have been doing it 3 days a week. I find that it is perfect for me bacause I am a beginner and the other videos are a little to advanced. My friend does it with me and is much more advance than myself but gets a great workout as well. We feel very energized after our workouts. I would highly recommend this video to anyone from beginning to advanced. The only criticism I have is that the instruction could have been better in the beginning.

I truly look forward to doing this video. It starts at a slower pace so that the beginner can keep up and gradually works up to a more intense workout. The background music is not boring and keeps you motivated. As an extra treat, there is a very basic workout with weights after the aerobics portion, then a manageable ab workout. It is a well-rounded program that anyone will enjoy: martial artist or not!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great complete no-nonsense workout!, August 26, 2005
This review is from: Kickbutt:Kick Boxing Video Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you are looking for a really good no-nonsense workout, then this is the exercise video for you. No cutesy girly girls in scimpy outfits here. This is a serious workout for serious people. The 3 people on the video actually sweat it out with you. The music is a nice heart reving techno to get you pumped up. The setting is a really cool boxing ring, instead of a bright, bland studio. The instructions for kickboxing basics on on the screen in the beginning. The workout starts with a true warm-up. The next section is the aerobic section, that starts off with punches and graduates to kicsk. The 3rd section is the free weights/dumbell section, which you should have a 10-20 lbs. set. (That's 5-10 lbs. in each hand.) No "Barbie wieghts" here. Be prepared to do lots of slow reps. The 4th section is the killer abs section. You will definately feel your abs work by the time Badrino is done with you. Finally the last section is the stretching, which he will stretch you to your limits like the true martial artist he is. This tape is definately worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great workout!!, March 2, 1999

This review is from: Kickbutt:Kick Boxing Video Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I just purchased this video....my husband and I are both about 20-30 pounds over weight. After doing the video one night, we could feel results the next day!!! It gives a complete exercise routine!! It gives a nice warm up, fast pace routine that includes forms of punching, kicking and squats, it also gives a section on firming, then ends with a nice warm down. The video is also color coded...just in case you want to fastforward or repeat a part..you can get to it easily on your vcr. The only things that I would say are missing from it, is they could explain the moves more by motion, instead of printing it on the screen before hand. I would have rather had them physically show me before hand how to do the moves. Also if you have bad knees as I do, there are a couple of moves that are tough.....but you can get around them without missing the routine!! I haven't had a problem with my knees hurting! All in all I think it is a great workout and if you don't want to spend all of the money on the new tae-bo fling...try this! It cost much less, the music is great, and also gives you a great work out!!! Enjoy!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars kick butt kicks your butt, November 3, 2002

This review is from: Kickbutt:Kick Boxing Video Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I just recently purchased this video through Amazon.com, which by the way is excellent in service. I thought the video was above average. I really loved the feel of the boxing rink and enjoyed all the participants. Badrino is adorable, so you overlook his mistakes. Kristoff does a good job and puts alot into the look and feel of the video. Jackie is great to follow and very pleasing to the eyes. Overall I really liked this video and plan to purchase kick butt 11.

4.0 out of 5 stars You WILL break a sweat!, March 27, 2001

This review is from: Kickbutt:Kick Boxing Video Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is fun and not too complicated, lots of repetitions. There are a few places with bad cueing, and I don't like the music, but if you do the workout a few times you know when the changes are coming, and I definitely turn down the volume and use my own music! The cardio part is way too short, but I tend to do this workout after I've already walked for an hour, and alot of times I will use it again at night, to give my metabolism an extra rev. I take a cardio kickboxing class as well as a martial arts class and while I dont think it could take the place of that, it is a good basic workout, that has me sweating by the end. I almost always skip the weight segment, and just do that on my own, but your muscles will feel the one included on the tape. I like it, its simple and Badrino's accent is cute! He's pretty easy on the eyes, too.
