WHERE'D DA 'FROS GO?,
By
This review is from: Kickin' Afrolistics (Audio CD)
I thought this bunch would burn up the charts with their insane lyrics & slammin', rubbery beats. Maybe they were a little too way out or ahead of their time. The Wayans Bros. understood them!! Their music was overwhelmingly utilized by Rosie Perez & the Fly Girls (which begat Carrie Ann Inaba of the Austin Powers flicks & J-Lo!!) who danced in between skits of the great "Living Colours" comedy show. Funky, in-your-face, comedic, cartoonish rap is the best description I can muster. If you like Digital Underground, The Black Sheep, Nappy Roots or The Pharcyde, you'll feel right at home with these big 'fro lyricists. Outstanding are, Feel It, Afros in the House, Jump, This Jams For You & Straight from the Penial. You are guaranteed to sweat yourself nappy!!! YEEAH BOIIIY!!!!!

Afros- Kickin' Afrolistics was released by Def Jam in the summer of 1990, the New York crew were like an east coast Digital Underground. 16 cuts deep and anchored by featured rappers Kool T and Hurricane (both from Run DMC's extended Hollis Crew), the album was produced largely by Davy D, Jam Master Jay, and Hurricane. Like EPMD, they had a heavily funk-track sensibility that set them apart slightly from their NY colleagues, and like Digital Underground, they had a playfully theatrical image, wearing the obvious afros and 70's gear as costume props. Hurricane also frequently adopted a nasal alter ego to serve as defacto hype man. My favorite cut has got to be `Hoecakes'- the pimp-themed lyrics are indefensible, but I dig how JMJ and company remixed the Monkees' breakbeat, and the closing dialogue is hilarious. Unfortunately, the album didn't go gold. Hurricane ended up going back to the Beastie Boys, and no more albums were released. In an interview in the early 2000's, Hurricane said an unreleased 2nd album was recorded.

This is a classic gem I picked up when it came out in 1990. I haven't heard it in years but its a great album. A unique album in a time when new genres in rap were popping up all the time. Recommended!
