Editorial Reviews

Called the empress of the unexpected by NPR, singer-songwriter Susan Werner turns another corner in her multifaceted musical career with her vibrant new album, Kicking the Beehive. It's an 11-song collection of provocative, poignant, lyrical originals that are infused with the rustic roots of American folk, blues and country music. Produced by Rodney Crowell, recorded in Nashville and featuring such all-star guests as Vince Gill, Keb' Mo' and Paul Franklin, Kicking the Beehive is a personal project where Werner intuitively explores the full impact of looking beyond the superficial and delving into soulful honesty.

With pockets of humor, wit, heartbreak, incisive social commentary and kick-ass rowdiness, Kicking the Beehive is the strongest Werner recording to date. On it she passionately tells condensed short stories of characters who confront such issues as homelessness, addiction, social alienation and disappointment. ''A good song is a good window,'' Werner says. ''All these songs can let us see outside ourselves. And as a songwriter, the best moments come when I can hold the songs up like a mirror so that people can also see themselves.''

Unlike any of her previous recordings, though the Susan Werner sound all her listeners have come to know. This recording, while often fun and spunky ("Kicking the Beehive," "I Know What I Want"), takes on a number of social issues including, sexual preference, drug addiction ("Botanical Greenery Blues"), a very touching reflective song on abortion ("Manhattan, Kansas"), and one song that can address anyone who is treated as different ("My Different Son"). As always, Werner's lyrics and music are excellent, and her talent is broad enough for every recording to be both unique and familiar.

Love this album. Susan can do it all so why not just let her do it? Rodney Crowell's talent is in providing clear, clean production. He did it for Rosanne Cash (so much better than her production since), Beth Nielsen Chapman and Chiely Wright so it's great to see him doing it here too. The songs are all over the map in subject matter but they all reflect the same consistent vision that Susan Werner brings to everything in her pantheon. Favorite songs include the ambiguous but sexy Red Dress, the perceptive take on autism Different Son, the direct I Know What I Want, and the primal Doctor Doctor. I personally prefer the ass kicking Susan Werner so she can kick the beehive all she wants on my watch.

Susan Werner doesn't seem to know there is a box - much less one she's supposed to stay in. Kickin' the Beehive is just another foray in her seemingly endless capacity to play it all. I love the title track; My Different Son brings it home about having a kid that doesn't fit the normal mold; I Know What I Want - taking on the right to love who you choose rather than what society sees fit; and Red Dress about the satisfaction of seduction and the marital bed. She's a terrific writer and these songs exemplify yet another facet of her talents - writer, singer, instrumentalist - one of my faves.

This is a masterpiece, and proves that, in the right environment, Susan Werner can do no wrong. Superb songwriting, vocals, and production by Rodney Crowell. And Susan Werner ain't a bad guitarist and pianist, either. I heard several of the songs on this CD in a live performance, and they were just as good as the CD versions. Which says a lot about Susan Werner. Is there a better English-language singer/songwriter on the planet? Nope.
