From Publishers Weekly:

"Kicking Cancer in the Kitchen: The Girlfriend’s Cookbook and Guide to Using Real Food to Fight Cancer by Annette Ramke and Kendall Scott (Sept). From two cancer survivors, a down-to-earth guide in which two women “share, girlfriend-style, real-life knowledge and experience about the healing power of food”—whether readers are in the midst of 'Cancer World', recovering after surviving cancer, or just want to eat healthier."

Review

"...a beautiful, delicious, and effective way to improve your health at any time—whether or not you have cancer or any disease. In fact, I recommend that all follow this sort of diet for optimal health!"— Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of the New York Times bestsellers: Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause

"Being diagnosed with cancer is a game-changer. As a survivor myself, I can more than identify with the terror, sadness, rage, and feeling of helplessness that comes with that diagnosis. You need support, love, great advice, and just a touch of humor to get you through it. This invaluable book has it all. Written by cancer survivors and based on their experiences, feelings and results, Annette and Kendall at once become your girlfriends, confidants, advisors, and comrades in your journey back to health. Their advice is sound, simple, easy-to-follow, and based in the reality of what it's like to live in the real world when you have cancer. I only wish I had this book when I was sick. . . how much easier my journey back to health would have been." — Christina Pirello, Emmy Award-winning host of "Christina Cooks" Bestselling author of six cookbooks, including Cooking the Whole Foods Way

"Fun, friendly, and inclusive, Kicking Cancer in the Kitchen is an empowering way to take control at a time when you're feeling pretty powerless. The suggestions are supported by solid science, and the recipes would be yummy even if they weren't health-promoting and —maybe — life-saving. — Victoria Moran Author of Fit from Within

"Kicking Cancer in the Kitchen encourages people to get in their kitchens and experience the healing power of good nutrition. I applaud Kendall and Annette for turning their diagnosis into an opportunity to teach others how to eat and live well." — Joshua Rosenthal, MScED Institute for Integrative Nutrition Founder and Director

“An essential guide to using food as medicine and creating an inhospitable environment for cancer, while delighting your palette and invigorating your senses. Getting well has never been more fun or tasty!” —Mark Hyman, MD, author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller, The Blood Sugar Solution

“As cancer survivors themselves, Annette and Kendall will educate you about your dietary choices, empower to make step-by-step changes to eat a healthier diet, and entertain you with their wit and charm.” —Beth Baughman DuPree MD, FACS, breast cancer surgeon and author of The Healing Consciousness: A Doctor’s Journey to Healing

“Whether you are a cancer survivor, previvor or someone looking to instill healthy eating habits into your daily life, Kicking Cancer in the Kitchen provides simple, delicious recipes and empowering information that can make a difference in your health and quality of life. The authors bring both their professional and personal experiences to the table. After my total mastectomy in December and halfway through my chemotherapy treatments, I finally ran out of the ice cream, candies and pastries gifted to me by well-meaning friends and family members. What? Kicking cancer in the butt is a hard job! But I soon realized that even a massive sugar high couldn't compensate for losing my breasts, hair, eyelashes and eyebrows (in that order), and it was time to start Kicking Cancer in the Kitchen (by Annette Ramke and Kendall Scott).

I was tempted to skip the narrative and get right to the recipes but since I'm the type to read cereal boxes, I couldn't resist a little peek. So I skimmed the first few pages until I got to the part that read, "We get it. We know what it is like to be stopped in your tracks by what seems to be a death sentence. And we know what it's like to awaken from the post-diagnosis, scared-s***less stupor and wonder, "What the heck do I do now?!"

Yes, Ramke and Scott absolutely get it. I know because their narration is as real as it gets! As I continued to read their stories I wished someone would have given me this book on day ONE of my diagnosis. Each of the authors tells her own story and they follow up with some very reassuring advice on everything from dealing with the diagnosis and ensuing surgery, to hair loss, attitude, decision making, relationships, support, scars, and even some advise for friends of cancer "chicks".

When they finally get to the food, they give a brief summary of the types of food we should be eating and why. If you've made poor food choices in the past, the authors make it easy to ramp up slowly by describing poor choices, better choices, and best choices. So don't be afraid that you'll have to make drastic changes very quickly.

I was suddenly diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, then rushed to have surgery, harsh chemo, and radiation. How I wish this book had been published before all of that! It is much more than just healthy recipes. The book deals with helpful things to do along with having conventional treatment. Doctors will of course insist that you have conventional treatment (cut it out, poison it, burn it out), and the Eating Hints they pass out if you insist are pretty horrible. While the book talks about the authors experience with dealing with surgery, hair loss, scars, and the reality of being a cancer patient, they also have advice about alternative options that you might find helpful.

I am just finishing up a Natural Foods Chef certification, and I decided to go to that school specifically to find out what really is healthy and what is not, since you read so many conflicting things. I would like to help others regain health. The two authors, after having cancer, decided to study the issue through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City. Their advice dovetails what I have sorted out by studying and reading myself, which boils down to eating a largely vegan diet, reducing or eliminating gluten, sugar, and dairy. And of course eat organic whole foods and avoid highly processed or pesticide laden foods. And eating a balanced, varied diet.

The book is written in a fun, easy to read style. The dietary advice and recipes seem to be on target. I had hormone positive cancer, so I also leave Tofu out of my diet, due to its mimicking of estrogen. And of course foods that would have growth hormones such as a lot of dairy products and meat.

I just lost two more friends from cancer. We really must put our money where our mouths are and eat like we mean it.

With cancer running in my family, I worry about what we eat. Unfortunately, like many families, we love sugar and processed foods and I'm constantly battling over meals to place on the dinner table. I love how Kickin Cancer in the Kitchen explains what our food friends and foes are and how easily it is to use healthier ingredients to please my family's cravings. This book has helped me (as Annette and Kendall say) Find My Groove with food again and I'm having so much fun making the recipes with my family. I now carry Kickin Cancer in the Kitchen with me in the car to make sure I stock the ingredients my family now loves in our kitchen. Thanks for making it so easy to understand and sharing your knowledge so I can help my family eat healthier. Be sure to try the Tropical Island and Mint Chocolate Chip Smoothies. So Yummy!

Hi! I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in June! From there it all happened so fast!!! After surgery I spent a lot of time reading and researching and "Kicking Cancer in the Kitchen" is the best book/resource I've read yet. The plan is a bit different than what I am used to eating but I found numerous recipes I can 'deal' with and incorporate and I will then refer back to what seems 'more complicated' for me and try them too. The introductions and background information on these two amazing women I found very therapeutic. Oh! Someone(s) out there understands!!! Thank you for that! There are so many wonderful people in our lives (gratefully and thankfully) who would do anything to help us. It is my wish some of those people will read your book also. You give a wonderfully put insight that would be most helpful to them in helping 'us'. And might save a lot of eye rolling and internalizing on 'our' part. The links you provide to other resources have also proven to be the best I've found. Kudos to you both for putting together such a fantastic narrative and resource for 'us' who are searching for real information; and those who are wanting to help us. Thank you for putting your energy here. Love and Light to you both and continued good health, Stacey.
