5.0 out of 5 stars Worth 10 Stars......by Far !!!!!!!!!!
This CD is an absolute knock-out.
Dori Caymmi is one of many underrated artists from the super rich realm of Brazilian music; the reason why? the abundance of cheap and superficial commercial music everywhere.
This is a fantastic Brazilian Jazz CD with so many different interesting concepts that you wouldn't believe, concepts that only educated ears can...

3.0 out of 5 stars The version of Brasil (Aquarela Do Brasil) for grown-ups
Worth the price of admission. As another reviewer stated; "very sensual".

This CD is an absolute knock-out.
Dori Caymmi is one of many underrated artists from the super rich realm of Brazilian music; the reason why? the abundance of cheap and superficial commercial music everywhere.
This is a fantastic Brazilian Jazz CD with so many different interesting concepts that you wouldn't believe, concepts that only educated ears can perceive; the compositions, the performance, the "swing", the timings, the guests:
Don Grusin,
Dave Grusin,
Abraham Laboriel,
Paulinho Da Costa,
Gregg Karukas,
Brandord Marsalis,
Ivan Lins,
Yutaka Yokokura,
Teco Cardoso,
John Patitiucci,
Claudio Slon,
Herbie Hancock,
Ricardo Silveira,
etc. etc.
I recommend it to you if you're into Jazz, Brazilian Jazz, or simply into beautiful and intelectual music.

5.0 out of 5 stars As nostalgic and deep as it's name, January 6, 2000

This review is from: Kicking Cans (Audio CD)
With that exclusive and incredible voice of Dori Caymmi, this album is full of deep feelings expressed with no words, just the music from the Dori's heart and soul. I was shocked when I heard this album, was my christmas present from my big brother, and I never been impacted like this with any album. This album contains the end titles song of the HAVANA movie, "Hurricane Country", which is a very nostalgic song with certain sadness. I really recommend this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most sexy version of "Brasil" ever recorded, July 4, 2001

This album has the most sensual, moving version of the song "Brasil" ever to have been recorded. You can feel the heartbeat down to your fingertips. Herbie was nominated for a Grammy for his piano solo on this song. If Herbie's solo and Dori's arrangment doesn't get you seriously in the groove, you need to get a pacemaker installed immediately. Dori Caymmi is one of the best composers and arrangers alive today. If you don't know his work, you need to get familiar with it while he is still here to share it. He has worked with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Quincy Jones and numerous other awesome musicians. I have purchased everything that he has ever recorded and would walk to the end of the earth to hear him play live. This guy is phenomenal and not to be missed...

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD makes me cry with joy, September 12, 2002
This review is from: Kicking Cans (Audio CD)
I've owned this CD for around 9 years and what I can say is that Kicking Cans is by far one of the best CDs I've ever owned by any acoustic guitarist. The music is Brazilian flavored easy listening jazz music but is so many miles above alot of the elevator music that you hear in stores. Where as the 1988 self-titled album is more of a soundtrack to the winter seasons, Kicking Cans, in my opinion, is music for the spring and summer seasons as the title of track 7 shows. Doris voice is absolutely incredible and passionate. Where as the 1988 self titled album is a very low-key album with very simple compositions, Kicking Cans to me is a bit more elaborate with a lot more a jazz influenced tinge but in a way that it makes a great companion to the 1988 album. What's also great about Kicking Cans is that while it's almost a decade old it doesn't sound dated at all. It's very difficult for me to write a review for this CD because I don't think I could do it any justice. Maybe a future album that is in the vein of this one might overshadow it but because of me enjoying it for over 9 years, Kicking Cans is the soundtrack to my childhood and when I look back at it, this CD truly brings back great images of it. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Rio, Sao Paulo to Salvador Bahia, June 19, 2002
This review is from: Kicking Cans (Audio CD)
I bought this CD in 1993 brand new. Since my copy has been playing for years, I finally decided to replace it. However, Dori's work sounds just as fresh as when I took the plastic of the CD years ago.

This CD is for lovers and close friends. Some of the songs are
so warm and soothing that they can be played over again for whatever the ocassion. This is my GOTO CD in a clutch moment. It should be one of yours too. Muinto obregado Dori!!

Ciao

5.0 out of 5 stars This Caymmi is a Master as His Father Is!, June 30, 2000

Caymmi is a Brazilian family dedicated to music. And what a family! Dori Caymmi is son to Dorival Caymmi, the famous composer/lyriscist/singer of old Brazilian popular music. Dori was a 2000 Grammy nominee and he is a longtime deserver of all prizes for his wonderful music. Though an excellent arranger, guitarrist and composer, Dori is also an incredible singer, with a strong, deep timbre. This is a must CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars I've listened to a lot of Brazilian music..., April 27, 2006
This review is from: Kicking Cans (Audio CD)
...and I thought this was incredibly boring. It's snoozy, unchallenging easy listening. If that's what you're looking for, then this disc is a fine example of the style. But if you want just a *little* bit of life in your music, you should look elsewhere. A disappointment, coming from the son of one of Brazil's greatest samba composers, Dorival Caymmi.
