One of the BEST albums in my entire collection,

By far the Gandharvas BEST album. I saw them live dozens of times during the 90's. "Kicking in the Water" really captures their live sound, and the essense of the band. Put it on, turn off the lights and zone out. Very inspirational, moody, trance-like and powerful. Much like Tool's Lateralus, but not nearly as heavy. KITW is more playful and circus sounding. If all artists created music like this, the world would be a more interesting place to live.

I originally got into Gandharvas because I heard that they used to be a Jane's Addiction cover band, and I am a huge Jane's fan. After listening to Gandharvas, however, I discovered that they do not sound like Jane's Addiction except for the fact that they create beautiful and unique music that cannot easily be categorized (and also, Paul Jago's voice is similar to Perry's). Gandharvas was definitely a great band, and this album is their most creative effort of all. It actually reminds me of a Phish album a little bit in that the music is very catchy, interesting, and happy sounding. It makes me feel like dancing around in the sunshine. But don't worry, it is not nearly as hippie-sounding as a Phish album. It is just wonderful music to groove to.

Their Best Album (And That`s Saying a Lot),

Less quirky that their previous album (Soap Bubble and Enertia) and more artsy that the succeeding one (Sold for a Smile). Kicking in the Water sees that Gandharvas at their cerebral, beautiful best. Great, catchy choruses and thoughtful lyrics. It`s unfortunate that, in terms of sales, this album was overshadowed by the other two. It may not be as comercially viable as the others, but that is one of it`s strongest points. It`s pop that keeps on giving.
