Book Description

June 1993 For Kids By Kids
Part of a series written by teens and preteens specifically for other kids, "Kid Cash" is packed with ways for kids to get some valuable experience in the working world. From conventional jobs like babysitting, lawn mowing, and snow shovelling, to more professional endeavours such as seasonal decorating and providing computer services, 14 year-old Joe Lamancusa tells his peers all about dozens of money-making enterprises for kids over 8. A budding entrepreneur and thriving businesskid, Lamancusa looks at each idea separately, providing a job description, job qualifications (very few, in most cases), estimated startup costs, target customers, tips for success, and suggested fees. He also offers general advice on topics that are important to the success of all businesses, like to how keep good records, determine acceptable levels of profit, and advertize and promote services.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 6-9. Written by an enterprising 15-year-old, this book is full of clearly described, clever projects for young people who want to make a little extra pocket money. Some of the ideas are "old standards"--yard work, baby-sitting, pet care--but there are plenty of original and interesting suggestions perfect for the budding entrepreneur: making and selling potpourri and jewelry, providing bait for fishing, painting addresses on curbs, compiling recipe collections, and setting up a gift-wrapping service. The author lists suggested target customers, anticipated start-up costs, appropriate fees, recommended tips for success, and "kid-tested" ideas for advertising flyers and brochures. He also discusses advertising (what works, what doesn't, why it's important) and fundamental business principles, such as keeping records, setting fees, and handling the profits. With interesting graphics and useful tips from kids who have actually performed the jobs, this should be a popular addition to middle-school and junior- high-school collections. Emily Melton

This review is from: Kid Cash: Creative Money-Making Ideas (For Kids By Kids) (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book and I think my 9-year old daughter will also. Not only is this written on a level kids can understand, he also includes flyers that you can reproduce on a copier (after they've been modified to include your child's own information). If your child doesn't want to use the flyer and wants to make his/her own, at least this is a starting point for ideas. I recommend this book!
