Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.

Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, the… Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, July 24, 2009
By
Paul D. Langley (Northern Virginia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Kid Galahad / Girls Girls Girls (Audio CD)
I really wanted to hate this CD. I tried to find reasons to rip it apart and say how horrible it is. After all, it is the near the start of Elvis' long string of movies, and it does not feature his best work.

But I found this oddly compelling. It is not the best music in the world. Despite that, it seeps into you. The songs are hypnotic even though most of the tracks sound like fragments, incomplete pieces that someone intends to finish later. Yet it is very listenable.

This is the merger of 1 movie EP with 1 one standard (at that time) short soundtrack into a single disk. The overall effect is a music that slips in and out of your conscousness, sometimes in the forefront, sometimes in the background. The standout hit "Return to Sender" does not jump out at you, it sneaks up on you, and you find yourself humming or singing along before the music drops into the background. The effect reminds me of Brian Eno's ambient records. And I never thought I would be comparing Elvis to Eno in a review.

On the downside, I don't know when I am ever going to play this disk again. It is not right for a party, or for active contempletion, or for any purpose I can think of. Yet I want to give it a chance to sneak up on me some more.

Let's give it 3 stars, put it in a changer on continous play, and hope than when it's turn to play comes around the heaven are lined up right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Couple solid soundtracks for Elvis fans, June 19, 2007
This review is from: Kid Galahad / Girls Girls Girls (Audio CD)
These two soundtracks were some of Elvis' solid material from the early 60s when he still cared about the vocals and before things started getting really, really corny script wise. "Kid Galahad" offers gems in "This Is Living", "Home Is Where The Heart Is", "I Got Lucky" and "A Whistling Tune" -- all in all, some great foot tappers and strong ballads.

In "Girls! Girls! Girls", you get a few more duds, but also some strong songs in "Return To Sender", "I Don't Wanna Be Tied", "Thanks To The Rolling Sea", and the title track. Other than that, there are some songs that have some things to be desired.

Overall, it's a fairly solid combination of soundtracks that I would recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad set, June 17, 2007
This review is from: Kid Galahad / Girls Girls Girls (Audio CD)
This includes the music from two of Elvis' movies from 1962, Kid Galahad and Girls! Girls! Girls! The soundtrack for Girls! Girls! Girls! was a big hit in the US reaching number 3 on the album chart and was certified GOLD by the RIAA. No soundtrack album was released for Kid Galahad but an EP was which was also certified GOLD. This CD includes one of Elvis' signature songs, Return to Sender, which was a huge hit worldwide. It peaked at number 2 on the US singles chart and was certified PLATINUM. It's flip side, Where Do You Come From, was a minor hit just cracking the top 100. King of the Whole Wide World was a modest hit reaching 30 on the US singles chart. All in all, this is not a bad collection.
