3.0 out of 5 stars A classic.
I am not a big fan of pit but this game is fun. The object is to mostley fly up and defeat enemies with ur bow and wings. It is sort of addicting after a while but then it gets very boring. It gets very hard after u get pretty far. The more hearts u collect the more health u get. Other than the extreme hardness and boringness it is a great game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game For It's Time, April 20, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Kid Icarus (Video Game)
With the release of Super Smash Brothers Brawl, I was curious as to where exactly Pit came from. With how many games I've played, I was amazed that I'd never actually even heard of Kid Icarus. Especially because it was a very successful and popular video game in the NES days, where I began my gaming. It may be late, but I'm glad I went back and played the original Kid Icarus. Also, if anyone is interested, it has been released on the Wii's virtual console and it should only cost you 500 Wii Points to download.

Kid Icarus is about Pit. He's on a quest to save the world from the evil demon Medusa who is plotting to kill all the mortals. Just like every NES game, the story is simple and straight forward. Kid Icarus has a lot of great gameplay elements to it as well. Imagine if Mario and Zelda were combined to make the perfect game and that's pretty much what Kid Icarus is. The levels are side scrolling levels very much like Mario, but you can also go into doors and purchase items like in Zelda.

There are four worlds in Kid Icarus. You'll go through the basic levels in Mario fashion. Starting with level 1-1. You'll then have to explore a labyrinth to get to the world's final boss. Each labyrinth is a maze of sorts and at the end you'll fight a boss.

The levels themselves are fairly well designed, most of them looking as though they should've been in Metroid to begin with. You'll have enemies coming at you left and right ready to take you on and all you'll be able to do is blast them with arrows. There are shops scattered throughout the levels as well where you'll be able to purchase upgrades and other items for Pit.

Kid Icarus may be short but it is most certainly not easy. Games on the original Nintendo, particularly in the 80's had a reputation for being incredibly hard. Games like Contra, Metroid and the original Mega Man were games you used to test just how good you were. Kid Icarus is much like those games. It's an incredibly hard game for a number of reasons. The first being that the levels are very long. Especially for an NES game. It's to no consolation that there aren't really any checkpoints either. Another aspect that makes the game very difficult is that you can't go back, and in the first three levels especially, all you're doing is going up. If the screen scrolls too far up, you can't fall and hope to land on a platform you already passed. You'll have to accept your fate and die. This isn't all. While there are shops, most of them have items that in the beginning you can't afford, and you'll also only be able to visit a room once. These areas, however, are few and far between.

The biggest challenge with Kid Icarus, however, is actually that the levels are populated with a ton of enemies. You'll be able to deal with not being able to backtrack, but many of the enemies themselves appear in droves and are often hard to get by. Just the same, however, you're encouraged to kill them to make Pit stronger.

There's no save system present either. However, there is a password system, and Nintendo obviously knew they made a pretty hard game, as you can also access numerous cheats through the password system. But you'll have to keep a pen and paper handy, you'll fall prey to your enemies several times.

It's a rewarding game to be sure, it's just another classic game on the NES that's unforgiving in its challenge. Those who began playing video games after the NES era will be in for a rude awakening.

In terms of graphics, Kid Icarus looks marvelous for the time it was released. There are a few graphics that come from Metroid and you'll even spot a few familiar monsters. On the whole, though, it's very colorful. The game also has some catchy tunes. Many of which will probably get stuck in your head. They're simple melodies.

Kid Icarus is a great game, but also a very difficult one. If you're not frustrated with games too easily, then Kid Icarus is great. It'll take a long time to get through some of the games levels, but at least it's a very enjoyable game.

Kid Icarus is one of the best Nintendo games ever created. Even though it's horribly old, it's still a challenge and has a gaming strategy that was virtually non-existent in most other NES games.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who has never played it.

quite possibly THE best game for the old 8-bit "antique" {can i say that}. geez i'm getting old. i remember craving an intelivision then atari then coleco {first to represnt the classic donkey kong i think} and then the C64 {man, lemmings was such an awsomly addictive game}. after all that came the all mighty 8-bit wonderland called "nintendo". "kid icarus" along with "metroid" where the two first games my parents graced me with WAY back in the day. O.K. i was going somewhere with this but i've lost my train of thought. ...oh, this game is old but it's still AWESOME.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some serious 8-bit weirdness, January 22, 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Kid Icarus (Video Game)
This game is like no other in-house Nintendo game on the NES . . . or any other NES game, period. Each major world phases from vertical scroller to horizontal scroller to fortress maze. It's a demanding platformer with lots of deadly pitfalls, but it also requires you to rack up the EXP for health and weapon upgrades, and the fortress levels are about as esoteric as something in a puzzle game. To conquer the fortresses, you have to free lots of little winged centurions whilst avoiding wizards who try to turn you into a walking eggplant, and finally, you and the airborne warriors you rescued must band together to slay the fortress boss. The ultimate level of the game, inexplicably, is a horizontal SHMUP.

It's a little hard at first, but very rewarding (and quite a bit easier) once you get past the first few levels. It's got good variety and fair amount challenge, not to mention a ton of weirdness. Too bad they never made a sequel till now, and too bad they had to make it 3DS only!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kid Icarus: One Bad Ass Boy wearing a tunic, March 11, 2011

Where can one begin to express their feelings when it comes to something so legendary. Kid Icarus has stood in the front runner of classic warriors that Nintendo could conjure up, making appearances for 8bit land, changing his name to Pit in Smash Bros, and coming out with his own title soon for Wii.

This title from my hay day was one that I have a personal vendetta with, only playing it when I visited my aunt (who was pretty radical) eventually filling a note book with passwords, which lead me to making it to the last level's castle doors.

Sadly I never got to beat the game, I recently bought it to collect. I would like to say one day I will beat this game some day, but who would Wild E. Coyote be with his Road Runner? I feel my world would end by stuffing my face with 20 year old Hulkster Ice Cream Bars until the Hulk himself leg drops through my stomach, Wild E. Coyote would be dreaming of swallowing erasers to fill the void that eating his reason for living.

I suggest you play this game with the intention of finding the answer to your lifes questions, as you climb each level blasting enemys with your bow, that shoots arrows of awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Way better than Chubby Cherub!, January 27, 2010

Kid Icarus is an interesting take on the scrolling platformer. Many levels have you progressing upward and you have the ability to leave one side of the screen and pop up at the other. It's a bit jarring at first but thankfully the controls are spot on.
The gameplay has you traversing from hell to the clouds as a trapped angel named pit, armed with a bow and arrow you have to work your way up. Each section of the game is broken up into a few stages capped off with a dungeon and a boss at the end of it. My only real complaint is that the game begins throwing everything at you from the get go, most games slowly step up the difficulty but not here. In fact the game plays a bit like an action rpg where as you progress, you get stronger, therefore making the game much easier in the later stages. I suppose there's nothing wrong with that, it's just really odd.

Kid Icarus is a truly classic nes game and it's shameful Pit still isn't featured in a new title besides Smash bros. This game comes with my full recommendation especially if you're the type that can tough through the steep difficulty in the beginning. Believe me, all the hard work pays off in the end. Seriously, the last level is a shooter stage and the game has like three different endings.

5.0 out of 5 stars NO KIDDING! KID ICARUS ROCKS!, February 24, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Kid Icarus (Video Game)
Kid Icarus is a creative and addictive classic that is challenging for all. If you were a koala, this would be your eucalyptus. It's an upward scrolling adventure game with basic jumping and shooting movements. In gaming, sometimes simple is best. A classic game like this tests your gaming skills unlike a lot of more modern games that rely on problem solving, task completions, and cheat codes. This is gaming as the good Lord intended. Mindless play action to help soften your cerebellum so Alec Baldwin can eat it. Yum!
