Book Description

December 1, 1998
Have your children ever been news anchors or starred in music videos? Made a gargoyle at a medieval workshop or gone on an art museum scavenger hunt? Been inside a termite mound or a mole tunnel? These are just a few of the 400-plus activities in this kaleidoscopic guide to great times with kids in the Washington area - an extraordinary resource for parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, teachers and others seeking to delight and enlighten their charges.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Hello. If you're holding this book, you probably have have a child, either a recent or somewhat older model. Maybe you have several. Or perhaps you're a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a teacher or someone else who is responsible at times for shepherding other people's children. Regardless, you're probably hoping to find worth-while things to do in the Washington area that will excite and engage the kids yet leave your sanity intact or - who knows? perhaps even enhanced.

You've come to the right place. The two of us have spent the last several years checking out hundreds of area attractions with our own and others' children. We've toured the town on solo missions, with spouses and with day care, school and other merry groups. We've done it with infants and teenagers, occasionally at the same time. We present our labors here - the best of things to do with kids, along with the information we suspect you'll find most useful in preparing for visits of your own.

About the Author

John F. Kelly was the editor of The Washington Post Weekend section for four years before becoming a Nieman fellow at Harvard University. Craig Stoltz is editor of the Post's Travel Section. They checked out hundreds of attractions for this book with their own families as well as with daycare, school and other groups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, August 1, 2002
By A Customer

This is the best guide to the DC and surrounding area, but in some cases this book needs to be updated. Some attractions have relocated or closed since the book was published. Fortunately, the book lists phone numbers and websites so you can make sure of the current location and hours of operation. I would highly recommend it to anyone, with or without kids, who wants to see the sights in DC and the surrounding Virginia and Maryland area.

Great resource. I just was hoping it would be updated, since it's been a while, and not all information is still current.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for curious kids (and their parents), April 9, 2001

We live in DC and we love this book! Whenever I feel like we need a new place to visit, I flip the pages and find something perfect to do. All of the places we've discovered through the book have been places we've vowed to return. My son is one and a half -- I look forward to exploring more and more as he grows up in DC. I work at a school and have also purchased copies for teachers to give them great ideas for field trips.
