I purchased this item labeled "KidCo Adhesive Mount Magnet Lock-Key

Set", reading it as Lock-Key set(Lock & Key) as listed in the title. The description also reading "THE ONLY MAGNET LOCK that installs with out tools or drilling!" and that it included a key and key holder. Reviews also were for the lock's effectiveness.

Upon receiving it I found that it was ONLY, which was disappointing. Had I known that I would have ordered the locks as well.

Review is not for product per se, but more to warn buyers so they don't misinterpret this as I did.

I used these to cat-proof my kitchen cabinets and it works like a charm. I didn't want to permanently install anything or mar my cherry cabinets. I installed them at the top center of the cabinet -- not above the handle. I have large pewter handles on the cabinet and had no issue with the magnet not working. I almost didn't buy them initially because someone said they wouldn't work if you have metal handles, but that wasn't true for me.

After much investigating, I decided on this key and the locks that go with it. I really like these. They are fairly easy to install. They are also strong enough to resist a baby like mine who is yanking on them. You can turn the lock off by simply sliding the tab on it, for when the baby is asleep or not around and you're trying to get things done. As an additional plus, your cabinets don't all look baby proofed, you can't even tell from the outside and once you are done with them, they come off without leaving any marks (you can put the optional screws in like I did on some but really don't need them as the adhesive is strong enough).

These work really well, but be sure to get a couple of the magnets, because we lost our first one and then we were all hosed for a while.

BEWARE...IF YOU HAVE METAL HARDWARE ON YOUR CABINETS, THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THESE LOCKS WILL NOT WORK. THE METAL HARWARE INFLUENCES/SCREWS UP THE MAGNET IN THE LOCK THAT YOU ATTACH TO THE CABINET DOOR, THUS NEVER ALLOWING IT TO GO INTO THE LOCK POSITION. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. NO WHERE WAS THIS STATED THAT THERE WAS EVEN A CHANCE OF THIS HAPPENING IN PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS ONLINE, ON THE PRODUCT PACKAGING, OR ON THE COMPANY WEBSITE. I THINK THIS IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR CONSUMERS TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING THE PRODUCT!!!!

These KidCo Magnet Locks require defacing the front of your cabinet. I had thought the magnets would work without putting screwing or glueing something on the outside of the cabinet.

Here is my top pros and cons:

Pros

1. Very quick to set up and install.

2. Easy understandable directions

3. Extremely strong backing--these will not come off without significant effort

4. I have custom cherry cabinets with thick doors-no problem for the magnetic key.

5. No screws. But there if you need them.

6. Sturdy, solid product

Cons

1. I found (after numerous trial and error) that they do not work with narrow cabinet doors. I have several long and skinny doors that I had to remove the locks on because they did not match up after the install. I believe the angle of the narrow door prevents the latches from lining up straight and connecting.

2. A few of the locks (out of 20 used) did not work properly. It appears the magnetic latch on a few do not sit flush when shut and this prevents the latch from hooking resulting in a non-locked door.

3. No extra sticky back tabs when I have to remove the latches --I have tried 3M sticky squares cut to size and they do not adhere at all. I then used screws and they worked fine. You cannot reattach with the original sticky tabs once they have been removed.

4. Magnetic keys are a bit pricey. I have 3 and keep them close to the most used drawers.

Overall performance is excellent after I figured out I could not use them on my narrow doors and found 2 that did not latch correctly. They are great when you do not want to use screws. We use a combo of the cheapo plastic press latches that have to be screwed in and these. I have put the cheapo press ones on drawers we access all the time--like our silverware--because it is less hassle than to get the key, open the door, put key back multiple times in a day.

I would recommend this product but not for all instances.

The best device of its type on the market. Easy install, secure operation. Highly recommend.

This is only the key NOT the lock!!! This can not be used as a stand alone product. In order to use the key you must already have purchased the locks. Make a sure you read carefully. I found the descriptions confusing!!

I gave this particular product two stars, because the key and key holder set is unnecessary. I suggest buying the starter set, to determine if the locks work for you and then you can order more locks. This lock key and holder is only if you want an extra key.

On a side note, I did go back and order the locks (the package of four, which doesn't come with a key) and I love the concept! It works wonderfully, was easy to install and required no drilling! My husband was also very impressed.

I literally installed these in under a minute. The tiny tot magnets took me half an hour and required a lot of drilling to exact dimensions and even that didn't work flawlessly.

In short, this product is fantastic. Could not be happier.
