My Install was into Drywall with no studs.

Fairly easy to install it only took my husband a few minutes, but he is pretty handy.

I have tried 4-5 gates for use at the "Top of the stairs" and many of the failed miserably. If you have baseboards, or a railing, they just won't fit due to the insane mounting mechanisms they have come up for these. Many are flimsy, or (in the case of pressure gates) they have a bar that goes across the bottom which is an excellent way to trip and fall down the stairs.

So, to the negative reviews. Simply put, They are doing it wrong.

-- If you use the lock nuts properly, the bolts are not easily removed. At all.
-- If you install the gate straight and level -- and use proper anchors for your specific installation, it is an EXCELLENT STURDY RELIABLE gate.
-- Yes. You might need to spend a few bucks at a home improvement store to get better anchors. My Install was into Drywall with no studs. I used these: [...]
-- The latch is complicated and high to make it hard for toddler to operate. If you think it is complicated. Good! That means it'll be a darn rubix cube for your kids.
-- It's not hard to install. If you are not handy, that is fine. Find someone who is. No gate that is too easy to install is safe for use at the top of stairs.
-- No, it doesn't auto-lock if you try to just slam it shut like many others. To me, this is a safety feature since I know my gate that does do this doen't always lock even tho it 'sounds like it does' .. This gate I have to consciously lock it, and it is obvios when it is, or isn't locked.

Anyways, I don't care if you buy this gate or not. Just know the facts.

We love this safety gate! We have tried a bunch at others' houses, even top brands, but they were all hard to use and ugly. This one is easy to open and shut with one hand, and my husband said it was really easy to install--only 20 minutes with a drill. All the young children (<5) we have had over for visits (probably 15-20 by now) have not been able to work the gate, even after they understand how it is done.

The railings are thin, which means it blends in to our house so much that people don't even notice it until they need to use the stairs. My daughter and even some 40lb children have rattled and leaned on it, but it didn't cause any problem at all. Also, the damage to the wall where the screws go in is really minor--we'll be able to patch it up easily when we're finished.

We knew we needed permanent gates because our two stairways are fairly steep, but we didn't want huge ugly gates marring our main entry. We also needed gates that would last and take a beating, because we know we'll have more kids. We found the perfect solution with this safety gate!

Our toddler rendered this gate inoperable in a matter of minutes!

We had purchased a Kidco Safeway G22 gate and extension two years ago and were VERY satisfied with it. Being in need of a second gate we purchased this Kidco Safeway G20 model, thinking it would be the same quality latch, just without the "angle-mount" wall hardware, that's not the case.

This gate latches by connecting to a threaded bolt rather than an actual latching mechanism (like the G22 has). The threaded bolts on either side have to stick out really, really far to reach the wall hardware. My toddler quickly figured out that it's really easy to unscrew the bolts and run off with them! Rendering the gate totally inoperable. Luckily I got the bolt from her before it ended up in her mouth. NO WAY is this gate toddler-proof!

Even when adjusted to the correct width, the latch is VERY cumbersome to use. I kept thinking it was latched and my toddler would come along and just push it open! I got frustrated with it within the first day. Honestly, it's really scary to think that this gate is recommended for "top of the stairs" use, that's how unsafe it is. This product might work well for containing pets but the latch mechanism is still very poor quality; the G22 gate is a far superior product, period.

I ordered this gate a few months ago and it has been a life saver! My one year old is so curious about the stairs that she always wants to be on them but the gate keeps her from them. She pulls on it and pushes it and it will not budge, it feels strong and secure. On the otherhand, my three year old is confident on the stairs and the latch is easy enough for him to open and close if he needs to. We love it and would use it over a tension gate any day, especially at the stairs. It give me piece of mind when I have to take my eyes off the kids for a sec.

Kidco must have improved the intructions as it was quite simple to install with the pics and templates. This gate is actually fairly attractive as well. I was looking at all the wood gates thinking those would blend in more but I saw a couple installs where the wood tones didn't compliment with the railing and it just looked horrible (think brand new black shirt with faded black pants). This looks much more modern and streamlined looking.

Someone mentioned its tough to open...well maybe if you don't adjust the bolts properly or don't offeset the templates. There is a tension spring that makes you apply upward pressure to hook into the insets. We have to remember we are trying to keep toddlers from opening this.

I looked and looked at the reviews and decided on this one, I must say I was "pleasantly surprised".

Lastly I was able to modify the gate for a cat door opening. I cut a vertical piece out and used a moldable steel expoxy to place it in horizontally. Then put some flat black touchup on it. Extremely secure, looks like it came that way and what a bright idea must I add!
