1.0 out of 5 stars Expensive junk! August 11, 2011
Durability: 1.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 1.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this item in the Spring in 2010, we live in Michigan and come late fall we covered it with a tarp so that the snow didn't ruin the wood. We removed the tarp and the paint was faded some but we figured it was no big deal and had plans to put another coat of water proof on it before fall. Since spring of 2011 this whole thing has fallen to parts! The door has totally splintered and fall off, the bench seat has also fallen apart and is no longer safe for kids to play on. I had trusted that when I spent 500 dollars on a children's toy it was built to LAST more than 12 months. KidsKraft doesn't feel the same, when contacted about this product and provided with pictures that it was the quality of the wood, not the lack of more weather stain they still only offered me the option to buy my own replacement parts, as they only guarantee a product for 90 days. I am very sad that this company can't stand behind its own product for more than 3 months. Such a shame, I wont be shopping with them again and I warn you ALL against this item. It is NOT built to last

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality product, give time for assembly. July 14, 2011

After finishing the build of KidKraft Activity Playhouse I thought some comments might be helpful. The product came in two heavy boxes and was well packaged with all pieces in good condition and nicely labeled. Instructions are easy to follow. It can be built with one person in 4-5+ hours to depending on your skill level (I have experience from IKEA). There is no floor so one may want to build one, place it on a hard surface or not worry about it. I plan to build a floor platform later, meanwhile it will be on bark. It seems easy to move. The floor dimensions are 40" x 48" with a 22" x 18" porch extension. During assembly keep careful track of all hardware (screws, washers) because there are no extras. An Allen Key is provided. I also used my electric drill with an Allen and Phillips head attached to speed up the process. Electric drills might over-tighten if you're not careful. I also used wood glue and claps, but its not really needed. All of the screw and bolt holes were aligned nicely and didn't require any extra effort to fit together. Overall a nicely built product for my 2 -5 year olds.

4.0 out of 5 stars A staple toy for American children May 24, 2012

Some things have become standard for growing up in the Western world: a wooden train set, Barbies, dollhouses, bikes... and you can add at least one outside item, a play house.

We researched this as carefully as any significant yard purchase. We bought before peak season prices. And we assembled it as soon as we could after it arrived.

In 2012, this playhouse comes packaged in one single large box weighing 120#. FedEx Ground is good to get this to your door nearest street level.

The best way to erect the playhouse is to organize the pieces ahead of time on tarps, tabletops, whatever (including the cardboard shipping boxes). A 10'x10' flat space is ample. We found about 6 wood pieces were missing their numbers, but easy to find after studying the instructions.

The larger problem was that all the metal fasteners were shrink-wrapped in one huge set onto a paper board, and the weight of the metal had separated the paper backing. So, all the carefully-numbered small metal parts were jumbled together. This is significant, because most of the Allen-head bolts are similar in appearance, differing only in length by 1/4". If you use the wrong-sized fastener at one stage, you won't fit properly later in the process. So ... in our case, one person was assigned to line up all ~1000 fasteners into the proper order. An hour wasted, when these pieces could've been easily baggied separately (instead of shrink-wrapped).

Three pieces of wood out of the set had damage requiring regluing and clamping. You will probably also have problems in the same areas: the outside deck bench is too lightweight; the supports for one or more window shelves are weak, and the door hinge side needs reinforcement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not very resistant but good overall July 8, 2012

The item is pretty flimsy; the wood quality is even worst than what you may find in an IKEA product, or something that you may buy at your walmart/convenience store.

While putting it together I've realized that the front area is not really that solid (the one where the door goes, due to poorly engineered screws placement, but once you put the roof and the little patio area it gets better. Just be careful while assembling because it may easily crack while moving that specific area to install the door.

It took me 4 hours to put it together (by myself and just using the hand tool included, which is an Allen wrench); overall it is quite simple and the instructions are great. If you have help probably it will take you even less.

My 3 year old loves it; I've put this product over rubber mulch (it has no floor), and once that you have everything set up correctly it stays up; but while I was assembling I didn't had a positive feeling about this product, especially about the life span.

It requires for sure a coat or 2 of wood stain to protect it, if it is exposed to sun and rain (which is what I would expect since this is an outdoor product....quite surprised to read on the manual that the item needs finishing to be able to resist to rain and sun effects).

Small kids will not damage it easily, but with time and the effects of the weather, is pretty much just a matter of time before that you will start to see cracks in the very thin wood panels, or worst.
