5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for kids and parents, October 2, 2007

My daughter loves this set and has an incredible amount of fun playing mommy preparing for Shabbos. My wife and I have nealry as much fun watching her pretend it is Shabbos. From covering her eyes and pretending to light the candles to slicing her challah, she spends lots of time with this set. Unlike some of the other sets in this series, this one allows you to actually slice the bread, which the kids seem to really enjoy doing.

My daughter has Shabbat every Friday at her preschool and learned all the prayers so I thought this set would be fun for Shabbat at home. She immediately set it up and started saying the prayers. It is perfect and I am so happy I have it.

This is a lovely yet sturdy set that my children love to play with. I like that they pretend to cut the bread, light the candles, say the prayers, and use their imaginations to continue the "game" after shabbat.

This is a child's wooden shabbat set. It is very sturdy and well made. We gave it to our grandson, and he likes to play with it when the real shabbat candles are lit. Also good for pretending. Parts can be stored in the bag that comes with it, so everything can be kept together. Maddy

5.0 out of 5 stars A Shabbat Treat!, March 6, 2010

We gave this Shabbat set to our son for his second birthday. He LOVES it! We pull it out on Friday night and he loves to light the candles and say the blessings with us. He plays with it every Shabbat; gives us pieces of the challah and drinks the wine. What a wonderful way to have him participate in Shabbat without touching the actual candles and drinking the actual wine.

5.0 out of 5 stars KidKraft Shabbat Set, November 18, 2007

My 3 year old loves it. Challah cover is a bit cheapo looking. Not sure why there are 2 challahs, there is not really enough space for a little one to "cut" the bread with both loaves on the tray. I just put one away. The "knife" is a bit too thick to fit between the bread slices. We'll work with it, though. A good quality toy to teach about the ritual of the sabbath.

This Shabbat set and Kidkraft's Hanukkah set were two of my son's most favorite toys from age 2-3. I think they are an essential toy for any family looking to instill a love of Judaism in their children. The Shabbat set is a particularly great toy for children who attend Jewish preschools as the props give them an opportunity to reenact what happens Fridays in school and at home. I also want to give credit to Kidkraft for being a great company. At one point we broke a piece and they sent a replacement with no questions asked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give your kids a "REAL" Shabbat experience!, August 17, 2010
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: KidKraft Shabbat Set (Toy)
At about $40 (here in Canada), the set was too pricey for us, so my mother bought it both as a present for my kids, and also so we could use it for the "Shabbat Party" circles I occasionally lead for other children in our neighbourhood.

There are plenty of pieces and everything comes in its own bag so the set is quick and easy to tidy up. However, there are a lot of pieces to the challahs, and they are very easy to lose.

*** SAFETY WARNING ***
Parents of unsuspecting toddlers, beware! Do not give this set to a 2-year-old who is unsupervised because the candle "flames" are removable and they are a choking hazard. They look exactly like bits of candy corn - I confiscated ours immediately and put away the flames. Also, the wooden knife is as long as a real one and, while not at all sharp, can present an eye-poking hazard if small people run around with it. For younger kids, I prefer a fabric Shabbat set, which is safer, softer and can take a lot more squishing and abuse.

(However...at our shul they have the exact same set and the flames are somehow attached to the candles so that they can't come out. I don't know if the set came that way (ie the manufacturer has fixed this flaw) or if someone there glued them in.)

In general, though, all the pieces are made of sturdy wood which is well-finished. Being wood, the paint or even the wood itself can chip, but that's just another reason why the soft fabric sets are better for the youngest kids.

Because there are many pieces to lose and because of the possible safety hazards, I have given this set a lowered rating for "Durability" (there's no safety category).

However, I really do love this set, and the kids who come to our Shabbat Party enjoy being able to handle these weighty, "real" objects. I use them along with a song about the order of setting a Shabbat table: tablecloth, candles, kiddush cup, challah (the set doesn't include a tablecloth, but our dollar store had a tacky lace one the kids love). By the second or third time kids come, they know the order of the song and are raising their hands to put each special object on the table!

The challah cover also does double duty as a headcovering for our "Shabbat Imma" - the girl who volunteers to be the Mommy and "light" the candles and sing the bracha with me.

Overall, this set is the ultimate prop for either Jewish circle-time leaders or parents who wish to play "Shabbos" with their kids. A must for any Jewish home or play centre!
