5.0 out of 5 stars Great Toy Box for a good price.
This is a nicely designed toy box that was easy to assemble.
This is the second Kidkraft product that we have purchased and have been happy with the quality.

Please let me preface this review by admitting I rarely share my opinion even though I am an avid Amazon shopper. Working full time in Social Services with a long commute and two small children, I simply have to prioritize my time and writing reviews has not been one of those priorities. Today, I have taken the time to write because I wanted to warn other potential buyers of the substandard quality associated with this particular toy box.

We purchased this KidKraft toy box and intended to use it as a gift from Santa for our one-year-old daughter. We had planned to fill it with a variety of toys for her to open on Christmas morning. We have previously purchased two toy boxes manufactured by KidKraft and purchased both of them on Amazon for our three-year-old son. There were never issues with quality. (However, we had not purchased this particular style/finish in the past.)

I read all of the reviews for this product. (Yes. I consistently read reviews but don't contribute like I should.) The general consensus was that this was a quality product with a reasonable price. I only read one review that indicated there were quality issues. I should have paid more attention to that particular review because I could have avoided this nightmare. He wasn't fooling!

Late on Christmas Eve 2010, we opened the packaging and began assembling the toy box. Immediately, I noticed the "cherry finish" was shoddy and looked like it had been sprayed on inconsistently. It was also more of a brown color than a cherry finish. But, since Christmas morning was just hours away, I decided I could accept the finish discrepancy. I then noticed the toy box was manufactured with poor quality particle board...not what I had expected from an "all-wood" product. I was getting a bit perturbed but thought I might be able to live with particle board as long as the toy box served its purpose of safely containing toys. We then started to assemble the toy box. What a nightmare! The screws went straight through the particular board and into what would become the inside of the toy box. (Her father is a seasoned professional contractor and had assembled the other two KidKraft toy boxes.)

The sharp screw tips protruded into the interior of the toy box and were an unquestionable safety hazard to anyone using toy box. The particle board disintegrated around the screws and actually began to splinter off. The joints were also substandard. In my opinion, the toy box would not withstand regular usage or the weight of a child. At this point, I demanded we stop the assembly process and start wrapping all of the intended contents. I could not give my child a gift that would unquestionably cause her harm. I immediately accessed Amazon and requested to return the item due to is being defective and thus, a safety hazard.

Please take heed before purchasing this item. There are other KidKraft toy boxes out there that are of much better quality and in the same price range. This particular model is of substandard quality and is a potential safety hazard. It needs to be recalled. Beware.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kid Kraft Austin Toy Box, February 16, 2010

This was terrible and cheaply built! I hate it! It said it was made of wood but its actually particle board. When I was screwing down the screws. It ended up pulling the end nut through the particle board and damaging the paint and board. And I hadn't even finished making the screw flush with the board nor was I using any force!! The hole is so much bigger than the end nut that the nut swims around in it and makes it a pain to center to get the screw into it. I did not assemble it because the particle board made it so flimsy that I am afraid to even put it together to let my child use it. I was so excited that I threw out the box and I am pretty sure I can't return it now. I have never been so disappointed in something! The fact that it even has a star not by choice. If there was a negative star, I would have done it. DON'T BUY IT!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Espresso is more of a Cherry color!, November 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this toy box because it the perfect size and it had a variety of colors. Since my daughter's furniture is espresso, I ordered the espresso. When the box arrived, my husband and I were very excited to put it together but the excitment quickly went away when we saw the color. It is NOT a dark, espresso color as shown in the pictures. It is a cherry wood color. We have Cherry wood furniture in our master bedroom and the toy box is an exact match.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect for what I was looking for!, December 17, 2011

I read all the reviews and purchased this toy box in cherry despite some of the warnings. I am glad I did. It is exactly what I was looking for and expected for the price. The cherry finish is beautiful and goes perfectly with the family room furniture. I did not have any problems putting this together alone, and no screws broke the wood. It is sturdy enough for my 5 year old and 18 month old, (not to mention myself) to sit on. The lid stays up perfectly, which makes it super safe for my 18 month old. It actully looks more expensive than it was, which is always great. I love this product, and would totally recommend it to a friend.

I would recommend this toy box to anyone, it's great, and very easy to assemble with just 6 big pieces and some screws. Very nice looking finish on the wood as well.

My husband and I currently live with roomates and share the common living space. My son is almost 3 and has accumulated a lot of toys and I hate it when he tries to carry toys in his hands while walking up and down the stairs from his bedroom, so we decided to find a toy box for the livingroom. This was perfect! This toy box fits perfectly with our decor and its huge! My son actually likes to take everything out and climb in it to hide. The lid is kid safe so it doesn't slam on his little fingers either. I love it and plan to get another to replace the one in his bedroom soon.

I was so excited to get this toy box, and if it had actually fit together properly I would love it. Unfortunately, when my husband was putting it together, the top didn't fit right on the box. So when we closed it the first time, the cover cracked right where one of the hinges is. I am so disappointed, and was really looking forward to a toy chest in my daughter's room.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad, very bad quality, Stay Away!!, July 14, 2011
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is my first review in Amazon, I had to do it to warn others.
I have assembly many furniture pieces over the years (outdoor, cribs, bookshelves, etc, etc) and this is by far the worst product that I came across with.
Starting with the thin/cheap "protective" Styrofoam that will rapidly disintegrate and make a mess where you decide to assembly this product.
The laminated boards are of very poor quality. Even if you are very careful, the washers can eat the boards making it impossible to connect the parts firmly. Assembly instructions are clear but the design is not and when you add very low quality parts its a recipe for disaster. I decided to go ahead and try to finish it, although a screw got stuck and the washer was already eating a lot of the inside panel, turning indefinitely. I had to improvise and cut the screw or use a hammer and pray. The minimum contact between the parts will scratch the white finish easily so be very careful. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.!

This review is from: KidKraft Austin Toy Box Honey (Toy)
The Honey color goes well with the Oak stained furniture we already have. It's holding up good but you can see imperfections (drips) in the stain. DH didn't want the hassel of returning it so we just kept it. Most of the time I don't notice the imperfections and it's ok. My son thinks it's great so that's what counts.
