    Features
The KN-COB-IC is an essential device to help warn you and your family of dangerous carbon monoxide levels in your home. This alarm measures the exposure to carbon monoxide over time; it is designed to sound at 85 decibels at 10 feet when it detects 70 ppm (parts per million) of CO for 60 to 240 minutes, 150 ppm for 10 to 50 minutes, or 400 ppm for 4 to 15 minutes. The added benefit of being able to interconnect this unit with up to 23 other Kidde devices—such as other CO alarms, smoke detectors, and heat sensors—all on one wiring network delivers extensive protection against fire and carbon monoxide (as well as peace of mind). The 9-volt battery backup provides continuous security if the power goes out. An LED lighting system on the unit signals power levels and sourcing: The green LED is steadily on when AC power is present and will flash every 7 seconds when in battery-only mode; the red LED will flash in unison with the sounder pattern for both a smoke or CO incident, and it will flash once per 30 seconds if the alarm needs service or be steadily on if the alarm is in error mode; and the amber LED will illuminate if the unit is the originating alarm in a CO incident. This device has an expected 7-year lifespan and comes equipped with a 5-year manufacturer’s limited warranty.

This detector really does have a seven year life span, though I don't understand why if they haven't changed the technology. After almost exactly seven years, within days of each other, my two alarms went off and displayed the ERR message. It would be nice if there was a warning of the approaching demise so one could be prepared with a new one on hand to install as soon as the old one dies. I am unhappy having to go without a CM detector during these winter nights while I wait for the news ones to come in the mail. Otherwise, seems to work fine.

My home has two of these carbon monoxide detectors hard wired and after unsuccessfully trying fresh batteries, realized after seven years it was time to replace this unit.

Trying to locate this model number in the local lumber yards proved futile so after checking Amazon and finding exactly what I needed, I ordered one and I received it the next day.

Unfortunately, I did not realize these detectors really have a shelf life of seven years because within one week of replacing the first alarm, the second one began to chirp. At least I didn't have to try the lumber yards again. Went back to Amazon, ordered another one and got it the next day at a price that was $5.00 less than the first one!

As an aside, a few days later, my neighbor's carbon monoxide alarm began to chirp. His home was built at the same time as mine (seven years), he knew I had just changed mine so I recommended he order two which he did. He changed the first and again within a week, the second began to chirp.

Bottom line, if you have more than one unit and they're close to seven years old, change them both.

I ordered three alarms in May 2011 and all three alarms have manufacturing date of 2008. These alarms typically expire in 7 years from the date they were manufactured. This means I'll now have to replace the alarms in 4 years. This is unfortunate that the seller is not giving full information about the product.

I added one of these hardwired Kidde/Firex CO alarms in our basement in the general area of the oil burner just in case there is ever a problem with flue gasses backing up. I have it interconnected with two other KN-COB-IC carbon monoxide alarms and four Kidde/Firex SA320CN Dual-Sensor smoke alarms located throughout the rest of the house. This CO alarm has a 9v battery backup in case of power interruption and will sound along with the other interconnected CO alarms when one of them detects a high CO level. It has its own distinct sound pattern to differentiate it from the sound the smoke alarms make. However, this CO alarm is apparently designed so that it will not also sound the interconnected smoke alarms, which would mean if you only had one of these CO alarms installed in a remote location of your home, like a basement, it may not be able to alert people in other areas of the building when it activates. So, the ideal solution would be to have one of these interconnected CO alarms on each floor in addition to smoke alarms. The alarm has a built in end of life notification feature that alerts you when it needs replacement with two chirps every 30-seconds. The Amazon product description above says this occurs after seven years of operation, but the actual User's Guide that came with it says ten years, so not sure which is correct. Overall, this CO alarm seems decently made and was fairly reasonably priced. Of course I hope to never actually have it activate from high CO levels in our home, but it's good to know it is there just in case.

Update: According to Kidde's website, the KN-COB-IC carbon monoxide alarms manufactured as of 2013 now have a 10-year end of life cycle, not 7-years as indicated in the product description above.

I purchased this unit to replace a failed unit, same model number. Expected the old mounting plate and wired connector to fit the new unit. Mounting plate was fine. I could not get the old wired connector to fit the new unit. Tried the new wired connector, it would not seat either. Examined the three pins on the unit and found a glob of solder on one of the pins (preventing the wired connector from seating). I melted and smoothed the glob of solder with my soldering iron and voila, the existing wired connector now seats properly. Other than than, no issues with the new unit.

These replaced a previous model from the same company. One of the things I learned during the research to buy replacements is that CO detectors have a fixed lifespan. Once they reach it, they will continuosly alarm. That was the problem I had with one of my existing ones. Replace all CO detectors at the same time. I selected this model because I wanted CO only detectors and could not find them at Home Depot or Loews. They only carry CO / Smoke combination units. We already have a seperate string of smoke detectors.

My previous Kiddie CO monitors were the old design. I couldn't purchase an exact replacement. So I purchased these.

These new models had a different mounting plate and a different connection. But, it took be about 10 minutes to remove the old mount plate and rewire the connection. All I needed was a philips screw driver (I used the existing twist on wire connections). I thought it would be a big deal, but it was really pretty easy.
