Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
The Kidde PI9000 Battery-Operated Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm combines photoelectric and ionization sensing technologies into one unit to offer broad detection against smoldering and flaming fires. Experts recommend that for optimal protection you have both types of sensing technology in your home. This smoke alarm's trademarked Hush feature allows you to silence nuisance alarms, while an indicator LED and test feature let you easily confirm that the alarm is working.

The Kidde PI9000 Battery-Operated Smoke Alarm:
  • Employs both photoelectric and ionization sensors.
  • Features a hush button to silence the alarm for non-emergency situations like a smoky dinner.
  • Compact design blends in seamlessly with your home decor.
  • Stand-alone battery operated alarm is easy to install throughout the home, as no wiring is needed.

With two different sensors, you'll get warnings sooner no matter the kind of fire. View larger.

Dual-Sensor Technology for Improved Safety
Experts divide home fires into two groups: flaming and smoldering. Flaming fires result from flammable liquids and cooking accidents, while smoldering fires most often occur when smoking materials, such as cigarettes, are left unattended. Ionization smoke sensors may detect smaller, less visible fire particles, like those produced by flaming fires, sooner than photoelectric sensors. However, photoelectric sensors are may detect larger, more visible fire particles, such as those produced by smoldering fires, sooner than ionization sensors. Each must pass identical performance standards to obtain third-party approval and meet Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 217, the independent standard to which alarms are listed. Because you don't know what type of fire you will have in your home, experts recommend installing both types of technology for optimal protection.

Experts Recommend Protection from Both Types of Fires
Virtually every recognized fire authority recommends the installation of both ionization and photoelectric alarms in order to maximize protection from either flaming or smoldering fires. Kidde offers photoelectric smoke alarms, ionization smoke alarms, and dual sensor alarms, which combine both technologies in one unit. Regardless of the technology, the most important thing is to ensure that you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas. Studies show placing alarms in both bedrooms and hallways could increase a family's escape time by up to 15 minutes.

Fire Authorities recommending both smoke alarm technologies:

  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
  • International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC)
  • U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
  • Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
  • Consumer Reports
  • National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM)
  • Underwriters Laboratory (UL)
  • Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience
By pressing the Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners.

This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately seven minutes. During this time, the alarm chirps every 30 to 40 seconds. If the smoke is too dense, the Hush feature is overridden and the alarm still sounds, and the alarm automatically resets at the end of the seven minutes. This convenient safety measure eliminates the temptation to remove the alarm's battery, which creates an unsafe situation.

Reliable 9-Volt Battery Power, Indicator LED, and Test Feature
Because a smoke alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn.

A standard 9-volt battery powers this alarm, which provides continuous protection against smoke and fire hazards even during power outages. The unit offers a low battery warning that issues a brief chirp every 30 to 40 seconds for at least seven days before losing power, letting you know it's time to change the battery.

The unit measures just 5.75 inches in diameter and 1.8 inches deep, and it features a neutral, white finish. It features tamper resist features to deter vandalism or theft.

This dual-sensor smoke alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 10-year limited warranty.

The Kidde PI9000 is a breeze to operate and has a hush feature to temporarily silence alarms.

    From the Manufacturer
70% of all home fire deaths occur in homes with no alarms or no working alarms, and nearly one quarter of smoke alarms in reported fires are not working. Both photoelectric and ionization sensors are built into this alarm, providing the best overall protection. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible fire particles associated with slow smoldering fires sooner than Ionization alarms. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles associated with fast flaming fires sooner that Photoelectric sensing alarms. For optimal protection of both types of fire, install this Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm. This model functions as a single unit smoke alarm with Hush feature, allowing you to quickly silence nuisance alarms. Install UL listed smoke alarms on every floor of your home, in hallways, inside bedrooms and outside of sleeping areas. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much easier to set up and better than 'First Alert' dual sensor., March 13, 2008
By CQ DX (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
I had purchased the 'First Alert' dual sensor alarm (with remote feature), and it gave me nothing but false alarms, some in the middle of the night! Not so with the Kidde. Plus getting to and installing the 9V battery was much much easier on the Kidde than on the unintuitive 'First Alert'. This Kidde dual sensor alarm is the way to go if you want simplicity, ease of use, and peace of mind. I think I am going to purchase a few more now that I know this model works flawlessly.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Installs in a snap !, February 3, 2007
I did a lot of research before buying this alarm. I ended up buying two this model and the Kidde 900-0102 both are dual sensor. I placed this model in the basement and the other alarm upstairs because it has a voice alarm that I liked. Each unit installs in a snap!

3.0 out of 5 stars Item failed in a year., August 7, 2007
I purchased several of these alarms for use in our home's bedrooms. Today, I came home to the sound of a smoke alarm going off. In our bedroom.

I rushed upstairs, but all seemed to be well. The alarm was continuous, just like an actual smoke alarm, rather than a low battery signal, which has a longer pause between beeps. I changed the battery, and the result was the same. It didn't matter that there wasn't -- thankfully -- so much as a spark or whiff of smoke in sight (or smell.) I took an identical alarm out of another room and placed it in our room. No alarm. And, yes, the self-test worked.

Looks like I'll have to buy another. I am only glad that the alarm didn't go off at, say, three am. I can only wonder if the unit would have worked in the event of an actual fire, as I have no way of diagnosing the cause of its malfunction. Needless to say, I'm strongly considering finding a comparable unit from another manufacturer.
