The Kidde PI9010 Battery-Operated Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm combines photoelectric and ionization sensing technologies into one unit to offer broad detection against smoldering and flaming fires. Experts recommend that for optimal protection you have both types of sensing technology in your home. This smoke alarm's trademarked Hush feature allows you to silence nuisance alarms, while an indicator LED and test feature let you easily confirm that the alarm is working. The Kidde PI9010 Battery-Operated Smoke Alarm: Employs both photoelectric and ionization sensors. Features a hush button to silence the alarm for non-emergency situations like a smoky dinner. Compact design blends in seamlessly with your home decor. Stand-alone battery operated alarm is easy to install throughout the home, as no wiring is needed. With two different sensors, you'll get warnings sooner no matter the kind of fire. View larger. Be assured of your home's safety with the PI9010 smoke alarm. View larger. Dual-Sensor Technology for Improved Safety Experts divide home fires into two groups: flaming and smoldering. Flaming fires result from flammable liquids and cooking accidents, while smoldering fires most often occur when smoking materials, such as cigarettes, are left unattended. Ionization smoke sensors may detect smaller, less visible fire particles, like those produced by flaming fires, sooner than photoelectric sensors. However, photoelectric sensors are may detect larger, more visible fire particles, such as those produced by smoldering fires, sooner than ionization sensors. Each must pass identical performance standards to obtain third-party approval and meet Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 217, the independent standard to which alarms are listed. Because you don't know what type of fire you will have in your home, experts recommend installing both types of technology for optimal protection. Experts Recommend Protection from Both Types of Fires Virtually every recognized fire authority recommends the installation of both ionization and photoelectric alarms in order to maximize protection from either flaming or smoldering fires. Kidde offers photoelectric smoke alarms, ionization smoke alarms, and dual sensor alarms, which combine both technologies in one unit. Regardless of the technology, the most important thing is to ensure that you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas. Studies show placing alarms in both bedrooms and hallways could increase a family's escape time by up to 15 minutes. Fire Authorities recommending both smoke alarm technologies: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Consumer Reports National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience By pressing the Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners. This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately seven minutes. During this time, the alarm chirps every 30 to 40 seconds. If the smoke is too dense, the Hush feature is overridden and the alarm still sounds, and the alarm automatically resets at the end of the seven minutes. This convenient safety measure eliminates the temptation to remove the alarm's battery, which creates an unsafe situation. Reliable 9-Volt Battery Power, Indicator LED, and Test Feature Because a smoke alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn. A standard 9-volt battery powers this alarm, which provides continuous protection against smoke and fire hazards even during power outages. The unit offers a low battery warning that issues a brief chirp every 30 to 40 seconds for at least seven days before losing power, letting you know it's time to change the battery. The unit measures just 5.75 inches in diameter and 1.8 inches deep, and it features a neutral, white finish. It features tamper resist features to deter vandalism or theft. This dual-sensor smoke alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 10-year limited warranty. Even though there are many, many types of smoke detectors available, there really isn't much choice. Literature on fire safety says to get one that has both the ionization feature and the photoelectric feature. You see many that only have one feature or they combine it with a carbon monoxide detector. Get a smoke detector that focuses on its job. Get a separate carbon monoxide detector and locate it down at your level instead of high on a ceiling.

The alarm is nice and loud, which I need. I wish it could wirelessly activate the other alarms when it goes off. You have to remove the smoke detector to change the battery, but that is very easy to do.

Don't forget to mark on your long term calendar to replace it in 8-10 years. The ionization feature may not work after that.

I purchased 4 Kidde PI9000 Dual mode detectors to replace working, but old detectors in our home. One failed within a month and after returning to Kidde at my expense they replaced it. Took at least 4 weeks to get the replacement. A few months later another failed, again I sent it back and received a replacement. Now at less than 2 years, two more have failed. I bought 4, I've had 4 failures, and I have two working at the moment.

The failure mode for the units was a constant chirping, the same sound they make when the battery is low, except on the failed units changing batterers, even different types would not stop the beeping.

I can't see how this failure rate is acceptable by any standard.

Two of Three units have not worked since purchase. Have tried calling Kidde multiple times. Once got hung up on by rep (after waiting 11 minutes on hold to be connected to a rep) because I asked where to find information she was asking for on product. I called again and (after waiting 14 minutes on hold to be connected to a rep)got immediate hang up by customer service without being able to talk to a rep.

I bought 3 of this in September 2008, and as of now, July 2010, 2 out of them have already died within two years. They died in the same way: just beep for nothing and would not stop. If you push "HUSH" button, then they silence for 10 minutes and resume beeping for nothing. This is crap, expensive crap!

I purchased several of these alarms for use in our home's bedrooms. Today, I came home to the sound of a smoke alarm going off. In our bedroom.

I rushed upstairs, but all seemed to be well. The alarm was continuous, just like an actual smoke alarm, rather than a low battery signal, which has a longer pause between beeps. I changed the battery, and the result was the same. It didn't matter that there wasn't -- thankfully -- so much as a spark or whiff of smoke in sight (or smell.) I took an identical alarm out of another room and placed it in our room. No alarm. And, yes, the self-test worked.

Looks like I'll have to buy another. I am only glad that the alarm didn't go off at, say, three am. I can only wonder if the unit would have worked in the event of an actual fire, as I have no way of diagnosing the cause of its malfunction. Needless to say, I'm strongly considering finding a comparable unit from another manufacturer.

I own 8 of these units, all of which were installed in Spring 2007 new from the box. I like that they are cost-effective, and are low-profile on my ceilings. They blend in very well.

I also like the fact that the manufacturer claims this sensor can sense fast-flaming fires, as well as slow smoldering fires with its "dual" detection features. That is very appealing. And, the alarm is VERY loud. That is all good news!

Other reviewers have mentioned these units dying or going off the deep end after a short amount of time. Well, I can add that 1 of my 8 units has finally died after just over 3 years in use. We came home from dinner one evening to one of these alarms going off (not the dead battery chirp, but a full siren). After checking for smoke, fire, etc., and determining there was neither, I pulled the active alarm off the ceiling. I switched it to another location far away from its previous location, and reset it, only to have the alarm sound over and over again. Thus, it seems clear that it is defective.

That opens up the following question -- having never had a fire, how much can we consumers rely on this model if they randomly go defective after short periods of time? While I regularly test my units, and change batteries regularly, having one die and/or malfunction for no reason raises a concern with me as to whether or not these alarms will work as claimed in the event of a real fire.

Statistically apeaking, they probably will work fine in a real fire. However, when one's life depends on it, it is certainly concerning that they can simply stop working as designed after only a short period of time. What if one stops working and does not make a sound, then a fire starts??? I know that is very unlikely, but it's worth considering.

I never tested this to see if it works (i.e. burning toast, etc...) but the test feature works. I hope to never have to hear this thing go into alarm mode... but if the unfortunate need does arise, I hope this thing answers its call to action!

UPDATE November 2010:
This alarm went off in the middle of the night (no fire/smoke/or anything else)... and refuses to stop alarming. This happened once before, and was easily resolved by cleaning the unit with compressed air. This time, however, compressed air was not able to help, so I'm not sure if it's a dust issue, or something else. This unit isn't even two years old now, so I'm a bit disappointed in it's performance.
