sly sly sly. these people lie. this is a sly album. !These people are nuts. ! This is her best album. It flows perfectly and the lyrics are somewhat whimsical and I like them all. 3.0 out of 5 stars Actually, compare to Shannon Wright
I think the most meaningful comparison is to Shannon Wright, who released the Albini-produced Over the Sun in 2004. I liked her pre-Albini stuff more -- Over the Sun increased the early PJ Harvey-esque guitar intensity at the cost of what made Wright so unique on her earlier albums. Seems like Albini has done something similar to Scout.

The instrumentation is really amazing and unique (who cares if she doesn't use a ukulele). Her voice is really unique and everything fits really well. The changes in the song are really interesting. And anyway I am writing this review to say " what are these people giving it 2-3 stars talking abotu". I have listened to this album over and over and over and over ever since i got it. I don't understand how someone could say she sounds that much like Bjork, she really doesn't, not even when she was in sugarcubes and such... Scout is raw cold tender unpretentious uniqueness and she stands on her own. she doesn't need you to appreciate her. you can tell she is pleased. kidnapped by neptune is a fun song. it has a certain feeling that can go different places but definitely has a certain simple feel. fun or thought provoking. it grows and grows. drums speak. early 90s drum. fun lyrics. sing it with a friend in a car watching the roads drive by you. you'll like it best this way. anyone have any recomendations or comments comment on me. this city. chase paper. nice instrumentation somewhat sly and different feeling from the rest but somehow shares it all. nice song order. wolfie. leaves you wanting to listen to it again or at least your favorite songs. give it a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, through and through!, May 24, 2005
This review is from: Kidnapped By Neptune (Audio CD)
Don't be led astray by superficial comparisons to Cat Power, Scout Niblett is the first artist since Kurt Cobain to authentically channel the passion of the screaming blues. From a hushed whisper to a full blown rocking wail, listen to this cd at the risk of spontaneous combustion. It's that hot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense, September 1, 2005
This review is from: Kidnapped By Neptune (Audio CD)
A month ago I saw Scout Niblett play live, expecting to see some whiny girl with a guitar. Much to my surprise she totally blew me away. She is a really sexy small girl with an amazing voice and she rocks out on guitar while the drummer pounds away madly. Her lyrics are sweet and comforting. Listen to this album, and go see them play! NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful, great for road trips, November 22, 2010

I loooove this record. I've played it over and over. Reminds me of early Cat Power, but more musically sophisticated.I love the big powerful drum beats, and her mousy, squeaky, impassioned voice, which sometimes remind me of Bjork. The lyrics are darling. Like reading the diary of a girl who is into reading about mythology and poetry.

3.0 out of 5 stars A letdown from her last album, July 1, 2005

Scout Niblett's last album, "I Am" (which I reviewed here at Amazon) was a delight. Her personality shone through with quirky lyrics and diverse moods. The music had a good variety, and the melodies were strong.

By comparison, this album is a big letdown. Nearly all her delightful personality is gone; all we get this time is a rather sullen girl, singing songs that all sound pretty much the same -- not nearly as creative as her last album. The lyrics don't come close to being as interesting or quirky as last time out. Instrumentally, we get no songs with ukelele this time around (although there is one piano track), less drum work, more guitars but less original sounding guitars. The melodies are also less interesting. How disappointing. It makes me want to dig out her last album again and remember the great Scout Niblett.

Having said that, it's still a good album (3 stars=good in my book, and is a recommended purchase). She still has more personality than other singers, and there are unique things on here in terms of what she does with her voice and instruments, melodies and chords.

So let me put it this way: If you've never bought a Scott Niblett album and want something different from typical mass market music, you might want to start with this album, then later get "I Am" for a step up in quality. If you have her album "I Am" and really like it, you might want to get this one too, but be prepared for a step down from "I Am."

2.0 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review, June 15, 2005
This review is from: Kidnapped By Neptune (Audio CD)
I liked her last album. It was like indie-folky singer-songwriter stuff. This new album totally sucks. The title track is barely even a song. It's like a kinda electroclash dance track, very percussively oriented and there's only 2 lines of lyrics, repeated incessantly. It really sucks. Lullaby For Scout In Ten Years is also more rhythmmic than melodic, and harmony isn't even considered. Most of the song is a simple bass melody, which the vocal melody follows along with note by note. It's sparse and monotonous. This song at least has lyrics though. The vocals remind me a bit of Cat Power. Then there are a couple of bursts of powerchord rock towards the end, which also follow the bass melody exactly. I guess her mission for this album was to get in touch with her primal rock self of something. It was a bad idea. The songs suck.

3.0 out of 5 stars does not mock or attempt to sound like any other bands out there?, April 2, 2006
This review is from: Kidnapped By Neptune (Audio CD)
c'mon guys! this stuff balances on the edge of a joke and screwing around. is everyone afraid to say this stuff isn't very good? scout sounds like cat power and bjork, two women with REAL talent not borrowed vocal stylizing.

listen - i like open recordings where theres just drums, guitar, and voice -or- uke and voice -or- piano and voice whatever. i'm just saying this is nothing new or exciting or groundbreaking. emma (is that her real name?) probably heard bjork and then cat power or holly golightly or souixie sue (i know the spellings wrong, sorry)and decided she liked this style and then copied it.

yes i know everybody does that but please don't tell me this is great or new or important.

having said all that - i like it. not love it, just like it. it's worth a few listens.
