About the Author

A man of many odysseys, Paul Hartal was born in 1936 in Hungary. As a university student he participated in the 1956 revolution and escaped from communism under dangerous conditions. He was educated on three continents and lives in Canada. Among his critically acclaimed books are The Brush and the Compass,Painted Melodies, and A History of Architecture.

An internationally known visual artist and poet, Paul Hartal won the the Prix de Paris in 1978 for his canvas Flowers for Cezanne. He exhibited his paintings in Paris, New York, Montreal, Seoul, as well as many other places.In 1975 the artist published his first Manifesto on Lyrical Conceptualism, an art idea that has evolved into an international movement, including the Moscow School of Lyrical Conceptualism. In the 1980s Hartal formed the Center for Art, Science and Technology. As Clifford Pickover points out in Mazes for the Mind, "the Center facilitates the exchange of ideas between the various domains of human knowledghe". In 1994 the artist was invited by NASA to exhibit his visionary work on space exploration in Houston, Texas.
