These are hard plastic, not soft as the heading states. Having said that, my two year old has hardly stopped playing with it in the last few weeks and even my seven year old boy will play along. You can play the obvious shopping and cooking games but you can also learn colors, practice counting, group according to categories and many other creative ideas. The items are all very well made and are holding up to daily use very well. I really like the fact that they are made of hard plastic and not the thin, "squashable" kind like a lot of play food. The items are really detailed, too. The pineapple even has a removable core! Bottom line; I plan on buying more of this type of play food!

We just got this in the mail today and it is fantastic!
My 12yo son is playing with my 1yo daughter. They are having a blast with this. These fruits and veggies "peel" and "chop." There is a handy canvas tote to put everything back in so my daughter can fill and spill too. As for the toy itself, the peeling is easy. However my 1yo can't quite figure out how to get the skins back on... it is a developmental thing and not a toy problem at all. My one concern is that maybe the velcro would come off after many "choppings", but it seems pretty durable, so it might be a non-issue. I really like that these fruits and veggies are common and recognizable for what they are suppose to be. For example, the corn looks like a corn with a husk. The orange is my favorite because the skin peels, and the orange segments too. It might've been a tiny bit more fun for the onion to have layers, but I'm not really complaining because it is choppable in the way one would cook. What a fantastic idea. I hope I-Play makes other sets similar in style to this one.

Great Toy Veggies!,

These veggies are not "soft" as described in the title, but my daughter loves them! The Velcro is nice because as you chop them with the toy knife, they make a nice crunch sound like real veggies would.

I ordered this for my 2 year old and he probably just wasn't ready for it. I've seen the wooden food with the velcro and liked those. I knew these were plastic but I thought it would be good to start out with. The bag it comes in is adorable and the pieces are of accurate color and the velcro works well. I guess what I was a little disappointed in was the scale and size of the food. It's all much smaller than I thought and they aren't in proportion to each other. IE: head of lettuce is smaller than the banana. The outer pieces are also fairly complicated to line up properly (like cover to banana or corn cob) so I definitely think it would work for older toddlers and children with the expectation that they are smaller

My 2 1/2 year old enjoys playing with these fun fruits and vegetables. Here's what we received:Peach you can cut in half, you can see the pit inside. Banana you can peel three times. Orange you can peel four times and then cut into four segments. Cauliflower you can peel twice to get the greens off and then cut in half. Cabbage you can peel two outer leaves off. Ear of corn you can peel three times. Onion you can slice twice. Bean pod you can open to expose the beans. We did not receive the pineapple shown in some of the pictures. We still really like the set! My little one knew exactly what to do as soon as he saw the play knife and the fruits and vegetables. He has no trouble peeling but needs some help stabilizing the item he's cutting, I'm sure he'll get better with practice. He is mostly able to get them back together on his own. I like that he is able to recognize each item, they are realistic looking. This is a great learning toy!

I recommend this because each piece peels or slices in a different way so it keeps kids' interest, it has a wide variety of fruits and veggies, and it is easy enough for a 2 year old to do but complex enough to keep the attention of much older kids. If you think the wooden sets might be better, think again!
I purchased this set for my 20 month old after seeing the Melissa & Doug wooden version at a friend's house. I loved the idea, but didn't like the way the M&D wood was already chipped and banged up and all you could do was slice every piece in the same way. I researched the different sets available and luckily decided on this one. My daughter plays with it all the time. It has been 4 months and she is now much better at cutting and then manipulating the pieces back together than she was at first. This is obviously a toy that will keep her interest for years.

We love this set. Some of the fruits and veggies have parts that peel, some can be chopped with the plastic knife, and there is an orange that can be chopped and peeled. All of the fruits and veggies are plastic, easily cleaned, and realistic looking. They are sturdy enough that they wouldn't smoosh if they got stepped on. Everything fits in the included mini-tote bag. There are a whole lot of pieces when everything is taken apart so the bag is great for keeping everything together and preventing any of them from getting lost. Our 2 year old can chop, peel, and then put these back together by herself. She has been into pretend cooking for a while and really loves this set. It is also a great way to practice counting as you chop and peel the parts. Some of the pieces that peel off are held on with teeny, tiny strips of velcro. I think that after being taken off and put on repeatedly, they will probably not stick so well. Even if that happens, the set is still a pretty good value because the chopping pieces have larger, more durable velcro and I don't think they will wear out anytime soon. Some of the pictures show a pineapple. This was not included in ours. The first picture seems to be the only one that shows the exact set we received.

Ok so I bought this for my son for Christmas 2010 (He was 3 at the time and now is 4). Almost a year has gone by and he still loves it and still plays with it frequently. This product after a year still looks like the day I bought it. The Velcro that is used for the parts to stay together still works like the first day he got it. Not only was this product a great price it stands the test of time for durability. The educational benefits are numerous as well as the physical ones. Yes I said physical because dexterity is very important. Hands on projects that can be done independently or with others are also important. My son is very happy when he is able to cut up and pretend to cook dinner for me. With your standard toy food you would throw it whole on a plate or bowl and pretend to cook it. This goes beyond that and teaches them that certain activities have many steps to get the desired results. I like that in assembling and dissembling the food it is almost like putting together a 3D puzzle. We are very happy with this product even after a year.

Bought these for the grandkids (ages 2 & 3) to play with when they come over. Some of them (especially the banana) are a little difficult for them, but I'm sure they will grow into the challenge. They don't seem to get frustrated with the ones that are difficult to assemble and they love playing with them.
