Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-A multicultural cookbook with little depth or detail. The 35 recipes from 23 countries are illustrated with lighthearted, stereotypical cartoons- hearts and reindeer for Scandinavia, tulips and windmills for the Netherlands, etc. The recipes themselves are sketchy. For example, the directions for smorrebrod, Danish open sandwiches, tell readers to find pate and other toppings and give specific instructions only for the garnishes. Directions to cut and chop neglect to specify size. The book suggests that cookies can be decorated with confectioners' sugar mixed with "a little water"-not helpful to inexperienced cooks. And apple juice in the Swiss fondue? The cluttered layout matches the slapdash contents. The "Easy Menu Ethnic Cookbooks" series (Lerner) gives authentic and more complete information about a country and its people, food, and recipes.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Kids Around The World Cookbook, March 1, 2001

This review is from: The Kids' Around the World Cookbook (Paperback)
This is a great cookbook for introducing children to basic foods from other countries. The recipes are easy to read and include step by step illustrations that make the preparation simple. There is a wonderful sampling of recipies from 23 countries around the world to include Apple Pancakes from the Netherlands, Oat Cookies and Welsh Rarebit from Great Britain, Stuffed Partha from India, Cold Cherry Soup from Hungary, Bobotie and Baked Bananas from Africa, and Lamb Kebabs from Greece. Each recipe includes background information that explains some of the Country's customs and/or the best way to eat the food once prepared. This cookbook is well laid out to make cooking unfamiliar foods easy for children and adults alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful memories, March 28, 2006
This review is from: The Kids' Around the World Cookbook (Paperback)
My mother purchased this cookbook for me as a child and it is something that I have always cherished. With beautiful illustrations of the countries the dishes are coming from, the book engages the children to learn about different cultures and cuisines. The recipes are relatively easy to make and most are appealing for the picky tastes of young eaters.
