Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-7--A glimpse at Canada from coast to coast. Each province and territory is treated in two double-page spreads that include a clear, eye-catching map and an abundance of illustrations. The text is concise and readable. Boxed facts give statistical information, while other sections describe the coat of arms, flag, flower, bird, tree, and landscape. The historical highlights are written to inform, intrigue, and interest readers as well as to give them a general view of the changing history of each region. Unfortunately, the illustrations are of a poor quality. Surely the time is over for a colorful, decorative-only approach to nonfiction for children that features fuzzy, overgeneralized renderings of landscapes, animals, and people. They reflect a lack of talent in drawing people, lack of research, and a poor integration of art and text. This one is embarrassing.

5.0 out of 5 stars lots of little tidbits of information, February 9, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We recently moved from Alberta to Texas. My daughter's preschool is setting up an International Section in their Library so I got it for a donation. It arrived and my kids really enjoyed it. Then my husband and I ended up reading through it too. Its got lots of little tid bits of information (from Gretzky to Nellie McClung) in it that you probably haven't thought about but are interesting for kids and adults alike. Its starts with an overview of Canada then goes through each of the provinces. The information is closer to the 8year old designation but the pictures are great. The little write-ups for each are easy comprehension for the little ones when someone reads it to them. My kids (5&6) loved looking at the pictures and I read them the information. It became their bedtime story book till I gave it to the school...maybe I should get another one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource on Canada for elementary students!, May 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is great! I bought it for my homeschooled daughter, who is in grade 3. For each province/territory, there are two, 2-page spreads. The first includes information on the coat of arms, flag, provincial bird, tree, flower, gem, etc.; a map and a geographical/topographical overview of the region. The second spread has an interesting timeline of the region's history, as well as interesting people and events related to the province/territory. Contrary to other reviews, I think the illustrations are lovely - colorful, detailed and bright. There are no photographs in this book. The only drawback is that, as it was published in 1997, it does not include Canada's newest territory - Nunavut. It would be great to see an updated version of this book come to print.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok, November 10, 2008
The book is ok. It just wasnt what I was looking for. I wish I could have seen inside before I bought it. I work with young children and this is to much. But it would be great for older children.
