Book Description

January 11, 1994 4 and upP and up
Making an adventure out of science--much like The Bones Book & Skeleton--the kids' book of kaleidoscopes turns ordinary kids into masterful kaleidoscope builders. Conceived and written by Carolyn Bennett, kaleidoscope designer and authority, with Jack Romig, this illustrated full-color activity book explains the principles of light refraction and reflection, color bending and bouncing. The kit comes complete with custom components, including three high-quality plastic safety mirrors, tube and turning end, a plastic eyepiece and tube cover, colored gels, and a starter set of plastic beads, gems, chips, and other objects to put on view. It's the basis for everything kids need to make 14 scope projects and do mini-activities such as Topsy-Turvy TV, Hall of Mirrors, and Breaking Out the Colors. Selection of the Children's Book-of-the-Month Club. Suitable for ages 8 and up. 144,000 copies in print.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for kids and adults, December 19, 2009

This review is from: The Kids' Book of Kaleidoscopes (Paperback)
My wife has been addicted to the idea of the kaleidoscope for a long time. When my son was young, he got caught up in the magic of kaleidoscopes, too. This slim volume is a nice introduction to the subject for kids. At the outset., the authors note that "The kaleidoscope can be a simple device--as simple as a cardboard tube and some pieces of plastic. But when you put the pieces together just right, the kaleidoscope becomes a peephole into a magic world."

The book begins by taking a look at the history of this device. Ptolemy had a sense of what might be; David Brewster, in the 1780s, made it real. Then, a brief discussion of kaleidoscope assembly. By the end of the introduction, one has a sense of how and why a kaleidoscope works.

The next section is called "Scope Science" and discusses the role of light, color, and symmetry. The final section, Scope Art, is apt to be the focus for kids and adults. This is the "how to do it" segment of the book. A series of projects is outlined.

Simply, this will be a lot of fun for kids (and even adults) who like kaleidoscopes. Lots of fun!
