5.0 out of 5 stars Treats everybody with respect
We are non-believers but we want our grandchildren to know what religion is and to respect it. This book is ideal for that purpose. It describes each religion respectfully and even admits that not everybody is a believer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Biased Presentation
With the five star reviews I hoped to get a completely fair and balanced presentation of the world's religions, but what I received appears to be biased towards Christianity. This is the best book on world religions for kids that I have seen. The coverage is thorough, and the illustrations are beautiful. The author shows a depth of understanding and a balanced viewpoint that are outstanding. In a kid's book, you have to cover a lot of material in a balanced way, choosing the most important points to highlight. I can't say enough good things about how well she has managed to do this. I teach middle school, and have struggled with teaching world religions to my students - how to bring out what will be the most important and relevant to them in the little time I have. This book is the best resource I've found.

2.0 out of 5 stars Biased Presentation, October 19, 2007

This review is from: The Kids Book of World Religions (Hardcover)
With the five star reviews I hoped to get a completely fair and balanced presentation of the world's religions, but what I received appears to be biased towards Christianity. I say, "appears," because the differences between presentations are very subtle, but compare how positive the pictures are between the section on Christianity and Buddhism and I think you'll see the difference. Maybe it was too much to expect a completely objective overview in a children's book. The book is still usable to teach children with, but requires a bit of explanation to insure an equal treatment. However, if you are Christian you should be very happy with this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Missing paganism !, June 13, 2009

This book has good explanations and nice pictures. I was disappointed though that there is no mention of pagan or earth-based religions. I expected at least a blurb about them, since evergreens and Easter eggs were included in the section on Christianity, and neither of these are religious Christian symbols - they are pagan in origin. I think the book would have been more complete with at least a page on paganism.

This book was purchased for my grand children, but I read it before giving it to them. It was full of easy to understand information and the illustrations were very helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great religion overview, July 16, 2010

This review is from: The Kids Book of World Religions (Hardcover)
This book does a great job of accurately portraying most of the world's major religions and the people who practice them, without bias toward any specific religion. This book details where the religions are primarily practiced, traditional dress, different holiday practices, common foods, and major ideas and beliefs. Each religion is given several pages, full of facts and beautiful illustrations. There are also questions posed to help a young learner start thinking about the different ideas, how they are connected, and how religion influences a peoples' way of life. Because it is a starter book, it certainly does not cover every fact about every religion, but it does hit most of the most widely practiced religions. This is really a wonderful introduction to religion, and really helps kids get started thinking and learning about many different belief systems.

This is an excellent book for educating children on the basics of the main world religions. Unbiased and informative. Presents a basic description of the religions, what the representative images and ideas are, and some of the holidays that are celebrated.

2.0 out of 5 stars misleading title, April 6, 2011
This review is from: The Kids Book of World Religions (Hardcover)
This book should be renamed Religions of Asia and the Middle East. Granted, of the religions it covers, it does an admirable job (which is why I give it two stars). However, Africa, Australia, and North America get one page each, and most of Europe and South America are ignored entirely.

Didn't read the book through yet, only some parts. With children this book is something that you occasionally want to have a look at whenever you or they meet children from other cultures. What I like about the book are the many illustrations. That makes it interesting for kids.
