By the time one reaches the third installment in the
Greatest Classics series, you've cracked the classical code far enough to step up to some grownup-sounding arrangements. So it's not until three tracks in, when J. Strauss Jr.'s "Radetzky March" takes a twirl toward the childish on piccolo trumpet, and pennywhistle, that the uninformed listener might catch wind he's tuned into a kids' CD. Verdi's "Triumphal March" proceeds regally, as does Handel's "Queen of Sheba," and Mozart's swanlike Piano Concerto No. 21 sails along exquisitely as ever. This CD's mixed-bag effect adds to its appear; as the series' final disc, it's a catch-all for must-have composers such as Rachmaninoff and Dvorak.
