Gr 1-3--Organized logically, this book first introduces the Colonial period and settlement of the Eastern seaboard by traders and seekers of religious freedom, and then progresses to look at their homes, clothing, food, religion, schooling, and play. The lives of children are not always emphasized; the brief text describes general conditions and does not always elaborate on particulars in the experiences of the young. Because of the New England focus, no mention is made of the fact that life in the middle and southern colonies was somewhat different. Well-captioned archival paintings illustrate the text. Unfortunately, the smudged and blurred reproductions impair their usefulness. Phonetic pronunciations of some unfamiliar words are included within the text. Additionally, these words appear in a glossary.

Lisa grew up in Michigan. When she wasn't reading, she spent time skating, swimming, and engaged in other outdoor activities. Her interests include psychology, history, camping, boating, hiking, and natural science which find an outlet in both her fiction and nonfiction. She combines these interests with photography in creative writing workshops for children. These students inspire her to continue writing.
