STANDS OUT FAR BETTER THAN THE FILM,

This review is from: Kids (Audio CD)
Ok, although I never cared to much for the movie itself, I always have dug the soundtrack to KIDS. I bought this disc sometime in junior high and it has remained a staple in my rotation ever since. It is an album best played when you have no idea what to put on (and this happens more often than you would think.)
Daniel Johnson opens this up with warped string section sound and pre-emo voiceover tune called CASPER (this song is loosely reprised later on in the disc.) Daniel Johnson was not the guy from Dinosaur Jr. like I had thought, that was Lou Barlow, and he can be found with his fingers in just about every other track on this disc except for two or three... Folk Implosion/Deluxx Folk Implosion rip into the punk rock styled DADDY NEVER UNDERSTOOD, which seems to melt into the rythmic NOTHING GONNA STOP, also by them... they also do the radio song NATURAL ONE. Throughout this disc is a good handful of tripped out chamber-like instrumentals, some other assorted weirdness, a little bit of underground hip hop, and some dubs.. oh and a seventies soft rock like song from Sebadoah (also Barlows so I have read) called SPOILED. All of these songs seem to mix perfectly together in their order. Some people have complained that more than half of the songs from the film were not included on this soundtrack.. but I have no problem with that at all. As far as I'm concerned this is a quality album as a whole, rather than just a random collection of songs, very surreal, but very chilled out, and very good for setting that type of mood. KIDS the movie was overhyped and overplayed, but KIDS the soundtrack never seems to get old. Pick it up. Yo.

I love this album. I can listen to it when I work out (it's very beat driven), I can listen to it when I'm falling asleep or hanging out (it's very mellow) and I can listen to it after I watch Kids and love it love it love it. Although I can listen to the whole thing without skipping any songs, I think the stand-out tracks are "Jenny's Theme" and "Natural One" both by Folk Implosion, "Spoiled" by Sebadoh and "Good Morning Captain" by Slint. I think my parents like "Natural One" even more than I do, maybe it reminds them of seventies rock? I'm too young to know. All are deliciously guitar-y backed with wonderful drumming and Slint is a marathon long, which I always enjoy. "Daddy Never Understood" is the song featured in the previews and is punky, but not overwhelmingly so and the Daniel Johnston songs are especially wonderful... two of the few songs that have lyrics. I think the weakest parts are "Simean Groove," only because the wolf howl is a bit cheesy, and "Mad Fright Night" becuase it is the only rap track on the album. This album opened me up to a whole new world of music, as cliche as it sounds, and I'm planning on buying many Sebadoh and Slint cds now, haha. Everyone who loved Kids should immediately purchase this.

overlooked masterpiece,

The soundtrack to the film Kids is without a doubt the best thing that has come out from the whole excercise, for me the existence of this soundtrack justifies the creation of the film. As you know Lou Barlow is quite a legend of the lo-fi acoustic style (any sentridoh is well worth your time) but here with John Davis as Folk Implosion they are dropping the beat with a side serve of big-fat-groove. the majority of the songs are by FI and their "Raise the Bells" is the only track on this album that disappoints. The remainder are all classics, the Daniel Johnston numbers are an acquired taste but have enough youthful energy to warm to all but the hardest of hearts. Which leaves the best for last. "Good Morning Captain" by slint is brilliance at its best, the first time i heard this song it was like a door opening to a whole new world of music and that world was slint. do yourself a favour and wait for this track to come around, listen to it and then buy the album 'spiderland' it is taken from, you will NOT be disappointed. The remaining track is the (about to show ignorance) best hip-hop song i have ever heard: "Mad Fright Night" by Lo-Down. Fat beats, minimal instrumentation and super-powered skills from the MC's, this whole song just clicks perfectly. i have looked for more information about Lo-Down but all i can find about them is that they are on the kids soundtrack, if anyone reading this has any info whatsoever about this band, drop us a line will you? Kids soundtrack, buy it you won't regret it.

Very intersting, very good,

In my opinion, the movie wasn't that great, but this soundtrack is a different story. I bought it mostly on my faith in Lou Barlow, the man behind most of the songs. It struck me as odd at first, but it grew on me. The songs are good (if a little repetitive) and some, like Slint's "good morning captain" or Folk Implosion's "jenny's theme" are lighty haunting. A strong album, if a little ragged on the edges

Any indie rock kid should definately pick this up. I'm not usually a fan of Soundtracks cuz they are just plain bad. This is an exception. It's more like a Lou Barlow album. The music was perfect for the movie, and it's perfect on it's own. Unlike the reviewer below, i liked all the songs, especially the 'Slint' track. SCREEEEEEEE....BZZZZZZOOOWWWWWWW...FFZZZZZ. Although, i could see how he weak-hearted might not like it. Sonic distortion of death!! translation...frickin cool. I was a huge Sebadoh fan back in the early 90s and this CD fits very nicely in that genre. Any Sebadoh fan should not be without this. Spoiled = The most emotional song ever created.

Underground Masterpiece,
This review is from: Kids (Audio CD)
For me, this is a prototype for alot of underground music- the stuff you never hear. it's got playful rhythms and dark edgy guitar. also some suprising tones that kick into you. Let's face it, the movie kinda sucked-with the only thing good out of it spawned 3 out of 4 careers (something happened to the 4th kid which im not mentioning here) the only link to movie is the music does kind of personify hanging out in NYC , from skating, to hanging out late in places you not supposed to be in and witnessing drugs, the NYC rock/punk scene, sex and old school raves(i dunno if Lou Barlow intended that, though but it does kinda link the movie to the album)-all of which are what kids were doing/seeing then, and prob now heheheh.. "Jenny's Theme" could remind someone of doing deviant things as a kid, whatever it was. "Raise the Bells" could remind one of the half awake feeling one gets from leaving a rave(back then) emerging on the street and seeing the daylight and trying to remember what time it is..not gonna go thru every song, but in the end this soundtrack is definitely more memorable than the movie..and for any fan of Lou Barlow, this should be in your collection..

The fantastic score to a fantastic film, it features many songs by Lou Barlow's band Folk Implosion. The music was all written for the purpose of making this movie great, and lacking such a motive in the past could be why all his other work is awful. It's great.

This has to be one of the greatest albums I've ever owned. From the soft and subtile riff of "Spoiled" to the angst ridden "Daddy Never Understood" this album contains all the sonic range required of a fantastic CD. Barlow has proven his songwriting genius once again as he has for years in his other various projects (Sebadoh, Sentridoh, etc.). A moody, intellegent, and brooding album that simply cannot recieve enough praise, and that's the truth.
