Book Description

November 17, 2005 8 and up3 and up
Times are changing, and problems that kids face are changing with them. That is why this popular book of advice and inspiration has received a brand-new updating. The author, a registered nurse and author of more than 20 books, helps youngsters deal with large and small problems—including staying safe and creatively occupied at home if both Mom and Dad are away at work. Practical answers to other problems include what to do if a fire starts, how to cope with failing a test at school or losing a game in the playground, dealing with bullies, posting a list of important phone numbers for reference at home when quick help is needed, coping with the problem of parents' divorce, and much more. Advice is direct and straightforward, spelled out in words kids can understand. Full-color illustrations on every page. (Ages 7-12)

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-An update of Playing It Smart (Barron's, 1989; o.p.). Subjects include dealing with strangers, death, etc. Each page introduces an issue, for example, "If you are home alone at night and the electricity goes out," and explains how to cope with it, emphasizing safety. Many topics are covered in greater detail than in the previous edition, and the section on Internet safety is new. The watercolor-and-ink cartoon illustrations are the same in both titles. This volume gives children some ammunition with which to contend with difficulties, and it is a great tool for parents and youngsters to discuss together.

This review is from: The Kid's Guidebook: Great Advice to Help Kids Cope (Paperback)
Plain and simple advice for children that they can digest and apply themselves. The book sets out a problem (e.g. what do you do when someone doesn't want to be your friend anymore") and seeks to answer it in a page. This is a psychology book kids can read, instead of their parents reading it and passing the advice on indirectly (so it has cred as a "non-parents' advice source", if that matters). I read parts of it to my 5 years old though some sections would be over his head. Other sections (like How to cope when someone you love dies) are for specific circumstances, but most are everyday dilemmas kids are faced with, and the advice is solid.
