Editorial Reviews

For five groundbreaking seasons, Canadian-bred comic prodigies THE KIDS IN THE HALL stretched sketch comedy to its ultimate limits with hilariously off-the-wall results. With a cast of comic creations only the brilliant--or truly twisted--could imagine, THE KIDS IN THE HALL: THE COMPLETE SERIES MEGASET presents the Kids nearly 800 sketches from every single episode of each season in this stunning 22-disc set. From the infamous Chicken Lady and Crushing Your Head to Buddy Cole and the romantically-challenged Cabbage Head, these pioneering, edgy, and ever-charming comedians always managed to land on the stranger side of funny--and look good in floral dresses while doing it.

If you are a The Kids In The Hall fan, there is a little I can add to the conversation about the irreverent sketch comedians that will alter your viewpoint. Wacky and weird, the Canadian comedy troupe defied expectations (and sometimes reason) for five glorious seasons between 1989 and 1994. So a shout-out to the talented quintet of Dave Foley, Bruce McCullough, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson for creating enduring comedy (I'm crushing your head), unforgettable characters (Chicken Lady), and daring fashion choices (the ladies always looked so stylish). Most of you will be here to see if and how this is different from the previously released DVD Megaset. So let's talk. This is pretty much a straight reissue with the addition of 2010's miniseries "Death Comes To Town."

Stats: There are 22 discs in total (the 2 extra discs from the previous release are for the miniseries). The packaging is much more refined. Each disc before had it's own case--here, the seasons are bundled by case so the slip cover houses 6 plastic DVD cases in total.

Features: The features remain in tact from the previous DVD set incarnation. As they are not listed with the product description, I will add them here. Everything, as I said, aside from the miniseries has been included on earlier releases.

Death Comes To Town: An entertaining and welcome return. From its opening scenes, in which Death (Mark McKinney) disembarks from a bus in small town Shuckton, we know we're in for an unconventional miniseries. The show, while always amusing, builds its premise over the episodes and its humor succeeds more and more as the characters are developed. When the mayor of Shuckton is killed, an innocent man is railroaded and the real culprit remains a mystery. Amidst all the turmoil and local politics, we've got Death lurking around with a secret agenda of his own. Playing multiple characters, as is their trademark, the Kids acquit themselves nicely. I loved Dave Foley as the mayor's ambitious widow (a dead ringer for Cybill Shepherd--I swear it even if you think I'm crazy). McKinney is terrific as Death and Foley scores again as the town's abortionist. By my favorite has got to be Bruce McCulloch's big city prosecutor. The trial in "Death" is inspired and is successful in skewering both small town mentality and classic courtroom procedurals. And one poor cat will be the sight gag that I remember forever!

Obviously, if you don't own any of The Kids In The Hall--this is a convenient way to pick up everything. And that's certainly my recommendation. If you own the previous Megaset or the individual seasons, it's probably not worth the re-investment. You can purchase "Death Comes To Town" individually to wrap up your collection. Either way, don't miss out on one of the most influential comedy teams of their day! KGHarris, 5/11.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect!! July 11, 2011

I love this show and it was a real treat to see the mini-series, "Death Comes To Town", included in this uniquely designed and yet extremely convenient box set. I've seen this show years ago back when it was on Comedy Central, along with Mystery Science Theater 3000, and it's great to finally watch it as it should be: uncut and uninterrupted. Every episode is in it's entirety, including a special episode starring Scott Thompson's character Buddy Cole, and the overall presentation and packaging is superb. I highly recommend this very innovative and creative box set to anyone who enjoys the funnier things in life.

More consistent than Monty Python, no heinous cast changes like SNL. Able to get away with more by dint of being on CBC in Canada, and HBO in the US. Read more

What's the difference exactly?
There would be no point in putting this on Blu-ray as the majority of the show was shot on standard definition videotape. The filmed segments were shot on 16mm film, so you would get a very slight bump up in quality for those segments, but not much. To truly benefit from a Blu-ray release the... Read more
